John's Story
Left Ramey in Aug '75; my family moved back to Maryland while I spent a semester at Bradley University. Peoria was the pits and I swore I'd never return to Illinois. I joined the Air Force in the Spring of '76 and was sent back to IL that summer for training - incredible! Eventually received my degree from U of Md. After leaving the AF my skills were put to use in a bucket manufacturing plant in Middletown, DE. If you bought a five gallon bucket of paint in the mid-Atlantic region in the late 80's, chances are I had a hand in making it. Having mastered the plastics field (remember the Graduate?), I started my civil service career with the Coast Guard in Baltimore, working on their cutters. A few years later, a position on their aviation side opened in Elizabeth City, NC and I moved there. (didn't we go to school with a bunch of kids from EC?) One of the perks in that job was visiting the CG Air Station at Borinquen. I remember going back for the first time in 1993 and thinking this was the land time forgot, but could still make out the "75" on the rusted water tower. ire in a couple of years and move back south. We have a daughter, three sons, a grandaughter and three grandsons.
Jan 2010 update: My professional life provided a nice surprise with a week-long trip to the Island in the middle of a cold DC winter. Stayed a couple of days in Old San Juan just as the San Sebastián Festival was ending, followed by a short day trip over to what's left of the Roosevelt Roads NS. Next, it was two days on and around the Coast Guard base at Ramey, with a guest house across from the Club at the end of Cliff Road. The weather was fantastic and the views were pretty much as I remembered - spectacular. It was nice to see development take hold in and around the Borinquen area, and a bit surprised to see the old base hospital turned into a hotel. Made a day trip to Jobos followed by a pleasant dinner at the Luna Marina restaurant. Of course, the highlight of the trip was the two hours or so I spent on the Ramey School campus. Other than the atheletic fields not much has changed at the school. Getting on the campus certainly isn't as easy as it was thirty five years ago. For those who haven't been back in a while I've added a few pictures for nostalgia's sake. I hope you enjoy them. J
