John's Story

One of my favorite memories from Baker occurred my senior year. I was taking a journalism course that was being taught by Coach ( Terry ) Lewis. One afternoon toward the end of the 3rd six weeks grading period when all the students in the class were seated Coach Lewis closed the classroom door and proceeded to tell us how disappointed he was with our class. He said that everybody's grade had dropped drastically from the previous grading period. He wasn't sure if it was because we had quit on him or if he had not mad the classes interesting enough. For our homework assignment that night he told us that we were to write a paper and in the paper he wanted us to tell him why we thought everybody's grade had dropped and what grade we thought we deserved. Well I knew why mine was so low. First of all the girl I had been going steady with had moved away and I was missing her a lot. Also over the Christmas holidays one of my classmates, Sally Keifer, had been killed in a skydiving accident and I was missing her also. But the biggest contributor to ...Expand for more
my academic decline was the fact that I didn't do my work like I was supposed too. That night I went home and wrote Coach Lewis a paper explaining to him everything I stated previously, my girlfriend leaving, Sally's death and the fact that I didn't do my work as I should have. The last paragraph went something like this. " Coach to be honest with you I deserve the F that I know I have. No if and,s or but's about it but I hope that you can at least give me a D because if I go from an A to an F in this class my mom is gonna kick my ass. The next day coach Lewis took up our papers and sat at his desk reading them. Once he was through with a paper he tell the student whether or not they got the grade they requested. When he got finished reading my paper ,he looked at me and with a smile on his face he said, " Very good paper Mr. Crimmel. Unfortunately its the best work you've turned in all 6 weeks. You get the grade you requested and please give my regards to your mother ". Every time I think about that incident I laugh about it but I sure wasn't laughing then.
