John's Story
Life
Since High School I have had a few different careers such as: Factory worker, Computer repair tech., Home electronic salesman, an Electrician at American Axle in Detroit and now a Pyrometer at American Axle. Over the years I have lived in Brighton, Highland, Waterford, Ferndale, and currently reside in Warren. I am married to a smart and beautiful woman, Susan. We have been married now for 7 & a half years.
College
I took classes through American Axle & Manufacturing Appreticeship Program at Macomb College in the field of Electrician. Now I will be attending Macomb again in the Fall for Metallurgy. This is for my new job as Electrician/Pyrometer.
Workplace
I started out at American Axle in June of 1995 as a parts loader. I moved up to Jobsetter after 1 month. After three years as a jobsetter I got into the apprenticeship program for Industrial Electrician. I became a Journeyman Electrician in May of 2002.
During the year of 2004 I was laid off for short periods of time a total of five times. I was ready to move on when an opportunity came about. Training to become a Py...Expand for more
rometer. A Pyrometer is a Tradesman that maintains caurburizing furnaces used for heattreating metal parts. That training was complete and I am now a Journeyman Electician/Pyrometer. Now in 2008 I am going to be looking into new work. After the over three month long strike, I to decided take the buyout American Axle was offering. I've been there for over 14 years and I think its a good time to get out the auto manufacturing buisness. Now things are wide open for me and I am looking forward to the next thing.
As of now (6/09) I have not worked for almost 4 months. I am going to a meeting, with Michigan Works, tommorrow and am looking forword to what they are going to say. Last September there was a lawsuit filed on behalf of the workers at American Axle. The United States Dept. of Labor stated that the loss of jobs at American Axle is a direct result of them sending our work to Mexico and overseas. Because of this ruling everyone let go recieves up to 2 years unemployment and retraining to an in demand job. So you may understand why I am looking forword to this new challenge.
