John's Story

Life After twenty-two years of service I retired from the United States Navy on June 30, 2006 as a Chief Petty Officer. I took a job steering tugs and pushing fuel barges up and down the eastern seaboard for K-Sea Transportation out of Staten Island, NY. In 2007 we moved to Yulee, FL and bought a house. The place has grown on me and was wonderful place for my third daughter to be born and is great place to raise all three. Life IS good. Workplace At K-Sea Transportation I steered the tugs TAURUS, BALTIC SEA, FALCON and NORTH SEA between Aug 2006 and April 2010. The work required that I be aboard the tug 14 days of the month with the other 14 days off. Good work having two weeks of vacation a month. The money was also good and I was doing what I was designed to do. HOWEVER, blessed with a wonderful opportunity in April 2010 I began piloting warships once again in May but this time as a civilian. Looks like we're gonna be here for awhile. Military 1986-1991 USS MAHAN (DDG42) homeported out of Charleston, SC. I did one Caribbean d...Expand for more

Qualified as an Unlimited Tonnage Harbor Pilot AND was advanced to Chief Petty Officer (CPO) 2000. Oh yeah...AND got married! NSRR was a productive stop! 2000-2003 Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Played a part in the establishment of the Penal Colony, drove MANY people back and forth in the Gig. I was the Base Fire Chief and more importantly the Chief Harbor Pilot. 2003-2006 Submarine Base New London, CT. Senior Navy Harbor Pilot.
