John's Story
I spent fifth through eighth grades at St. Joan of Arc, and then started as a freshman at Cathedral in 1972. After graduating from Cathedral in 1976, I moved on down the road a couple of miles to WNEC, from which I graduated in 1980 with a B.A. in English. Like many liberal arts majors who weren't sure what to do with their degree, I ended up in law school -- I attended the Hofstra University School of Law in New York (Long Island), graduating in 1983. While in law school, I got an offer to spend a summer working at a law firm in Pittsburgh called Reed Smith -- the summer worked out well, and I moved here after graduating to accept a full-time position. I remained at Reed Smith for 16 years before accepting an offer of partnership from another law firm, Morgan Lewis, to join its Pittsburgh office. I have been a Morgan Lewis partner since 1999. My specialty is executive compensation and employee benefits (fortunately, a very busy area in good times and bad); my practice takes me from one end of the country to the other. d Fox Chapel; we have three children (Tyler, age 14, Victoria, age 12 and Kyle, age 11), as well as a menagerie of pets (dog, cats, guinea pigs -- at various times, we have also had fish, hermit crabs and crayfish, but they have all moved on to a better place). Pittsburgh is far from western Massachusetts, but is much like home; plenty of hills, rivers and valleys, great sports fans (Steeler Nation!), and friendly, down-to-earth, hard-working people. It's been a great move for me, professionally and personally, although I rarely get back to the Springfield area, and I do miss the New England winters (we get more rain than snow here). My best to all my classmates. (To my fellow CHS alums: Don't be bothered if you can't remember me; our class was huge, and I was one of the many who passed through CHS without making much of an impression, other than a brief shining moment as a member of the "As Schools Match Wits" team in our senior year -- we are best remembered for having blown a religion question (!) in the championship round and losing to four girls from Easthampton High.)
