John's Story

8-23-2011 I'm getting ready to go to Burning Man in Black Rock, Nevada to camp on a dry lakebed with 49,999 other insane people in 100 degree PLUS weather. I expect it will be like camping on Mars! I think I'm ready for this. Johnny Robinson is meeting me in Reno, and we'll caravan in together and set up Camp YARD APE! I've never been to a reunion. Skyline was a big, new school and the sorts of folks I would like to meet again are not the ones likely to show up at events like this. After a year at Eastfield, I was off to the San Francisco Art Institute. Lived there for five years during which Patty Hearst was on the lamb and the Viking Lander shoveled sand on Mars. I Worked as a gopher in the Law Offices of Melvin Belli, The King of Torts, who defended Jack Ruby. While working there I snooped around in the files a bit. I read a Belli court brief from Ruby's trial in which their position was that Ruby shot Oswald in a moment of patriotically-motivated psycho-motor epilepsy triggered by the press cameraman's flash bulbs. (Hey, it coulda happened!) I grew up in Casa View on a street that dead-ended into the field that housed the Casa View Drive In. On summer evenings we could watch movies for free from Keith Williams' corner lot yard. There was a man on our street who told my parents that he was with the FBI. He claimed to have been in the Texas Theater when Oswald was arrested, said HE stopped Lee Harvey from firing his drawn pistol! I've never been able to find any reference to the FBI being involved in that arrest. On our block there was an old, portly guy with a young, curvaceous trophy wife. She told us her husband had 'business ties' with Jack Ruby, nothing more. The odd thing was... we never asked! My friend, Richard Hoefle's mother was Janet Felt (Hoefle). Her brother, Mark, worked directly under J. Edgar Hoover at the FBI. Mark Felt publicly admitted to being 'Deep Throat' a few years ago. I met him a couple of times when I was a kid. One day my sister and I were downtown, walking along Commerce toward the old library with that aluminum sculpture on the front. As we walked past the Hilton, a limo was just pulling into the Port Cochere. Richard Nixon emerged and gave his signature, double victory hand signs to everyone on the street. The curious thing was, my sister and I were the only ones there. Richard Hoefle's father, Karl, illustrated our Yellow Pages covers, each on...Expand for more
e a scratch board masterpiece. Richard and I had a friend named Scottie Buchanan, whose father made wonderful, bad horror movies for American International with titles like, "Zontar The Thing From Venus" and "Mars Needs Women". He shot some of his films at the White Rock Lake Pump House that we used to love to break into. Larry Buchanan later wrote his autobiography, calling it, "It Came From Hunger". Then I met Eric Smith at Skyline. His father, Sam, was Art Director at WFAA and designed all the sets and props for Mr. Peppermint. The Music Shop and The Candy Counter, The Dragon Wagon, Miss Lucy Long and ALL that stuff. Years later, I worked on a movie, called "Papa Was A Preacher" and Jerry Hanes had a part in that. Imogene Coco did, too, and so did Dean Stockwell, The Boy With Green Hair. After High School I worked at the TGI Friday's on Greenville and saw some personalities come through. Wally Schirra, Ricardo Montalban and Bob Crane are the ones I can remember. Not at the same time, though. Having lived in Dallas offers strange linkages with the random tidal movements of history, curious "Six Degrees Of Kevin Bacon" connections and the opportunity to sit on the banks and splash one's feet in the cool, swift currents of history. I think it is possible that Oswald acted alone. I have no doubt that we landed on the Moon. The Twin Towers did NOT collapse as a result of controlled demolition and I have nagging doubts about the "Hollow Earth Theory". I've never seen a ghost or a UFO, though I think it would be fun to live in a world where we were pestered by such things. I've spent my life going for the next most interesting thing on the horizon. It's been a pretty good time so far. Graphic Design Illustration Set Construction Scenic Painting Storyboard Illustration Motion Picture Art Direction Miniature Special Effects Theme Park Special Effects at Disney I've worked in Dallas, San Francisco, Liverpool, Los Angeles, Gafney South Carolina, Anaheim, Orlando, Tokyo and Paris. I do a bit of art on my own, too. Here's a place where I dump a lot of photos for friends and family to share: ht t p (colon, back slash, back slash) s58 dot photobucket dot com/albums/g271/Satweavers/ Decode the address to enter. Thousands of images. If you see Richard Hoefle out there, tell him Happy Birthday! Tell him to get in touch. It's been too many years since we've talked. I'm happy to hear from anyone!
