John's Story

Life I survived 12 years of Catholic school, then went to El Camino College, followed by CSUF to get a B.S. in P.E. In 1973, I had a very serious construction accident and was in a coma for 2 weeks. It took 15 years for me to "come back", and since then I've continued to improve. I'm now working with people with brain injury to help them improve cognitively, adjust to their losses and then get working. I'm married to a wonderful woman, Shirley; have a step-daughter Amy and 2 grandchildren, Elizabeth (21) and Ashley (8). I live in the central Richmond district of San Francisco and love it here. I also volunteer for "Rock Medicine" a program of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics: we set up *MASH* stations at large events (mostly music events) and we deal with the patrons who need help. Shirley and I work the "Space Station", talking down people who have had too much (excitement, crowd anxiety, alcohol, and all manner of substances). We get the best stories: completely unbelievable things happen in Rock Med and we love it. We also took our first cruise to Alaska: spectacular! I hope you are all well. School Preschool/kindergarten at Hermosa View School; grammar school at American Martyrs; high school at Bishop Montgomery [with a summer class in auto mechanics at El Camino College): I took French for 3 years (remember little)]; a semester vacation, then to El Camino College with coursework in Math, Physical Education and Auto Mechanics and Auto Body; then to C.S.U.F. for a Bachelors in Physical Education. In 1978, I went to Bowling Green State University for my Master of Rehabilitation Counseling degree from 1978-1980. I also took classes in Sign Language (remember little). From 1986-1990, I earned a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology. I took a course in Auto Body and 2 classes in Portugeuse [remember little: is there a pattern here? 8-) ] I always wanted to be a scientist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. ...Expand for more
As it turns out, they were mistaken. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have good vibes, good people, and fun to be able to deal with the day-to-day. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have good people, good work environment, and a light atmosphere to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My "hero" is Viktor Frankl, the man who not only endured the Nazi concentration camps, but thrived and developed a philosophy: a way of looking at the experience to help us all with our trials. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Sister Francis Margaret, because i'd like to show her what happened with me.. Well, this i learned from my cats (but they're like kids): EVERYTHING is a toy and life is meant to be fun! If I won $100 million, I'd give most of it to developing a brain injury facility, then spend the rest on the back unit of our building, family and putting on free concerts, like Warren Hellman. My current age is 58. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be geezers. I was so completely right!. To help as many people with TBI as possible to achieve their cognitive, emotional and vocational goals. My best friend would tell you I'm loony, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as "eccentric".. i dress up a lot more, but when i'm casual, i still like levis and Hawaiian shirts. I share my home with my wife and 2 cats, which I find fun. In 10 years, I hope to be enjoying life even MORE . I'm going to get there by living in the now. I met Don in the neighborhood (Redondo Beach). We clicked as we both liked skateboarding and basketball. My first job was at the Daily Breeze, where I got paid ABOUT $30.00 a month to deliver papers. What I remember most about it is the steepness of the hills. Doing a 'wheelie' on my skateboard for over 1/2 mile and having the back of the skateboard get so hot that it started burning and throwing off big clouds of smoke (like a dragster).
