John's Story
Life
I finished High School in 1978 knowing I needed to get a College degree. I had a strong interest in Science and I was more likely to succeed with a degree, than in a hands-on profession such as carpentry for example. I received a BS degree in Chemistry from the UW in 1984. This yielded a few interviews but no job offers. The oil industry was in shambles and Reagan gutted all of Carter's alternative energy projects, so science jobs were scarce.
I received a scholarship for MBA school and attended with the idea of increasing my starting income and making myself more employable. I sold the majority of my possesions, rented a ten foot U-haul trailer and towed it with my 69 mustang from Edmonds, Wa. to Orlando, Fl. I visited college buddies in Dallas and Wash DC on the way there.
The effort succeeded, and I landed a job as a Bank Examiner for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta. In retrospect this was a great job, but I wanted a job closer to the Chemistry that I loved, so I got a BS in pharmacy in 1992. I have worked for Walgreens ever since, and I am currently a Pha...Expand for more
rmacy Manager in Everett, Wa. To be a pharmacist is much harder than it looks. In fact it requires nerves of steel, but demand is high and if you have any talent, employment is virtually assured.
I married Barbra in 1988, added my son James in 1992 and my daughter Jennifer in 1995. I am currently married with children. Barbra is a successful banker, James is an athelete and a scholar. Jennifer is my sunshine. My family is doing very well at this point in time.
The most interesting thing I have learned so far is the importance of the element of luck in life. Most successful people know that they are talented and work hard for the success that they achieve. They automatically assume their success is due to their talent and hard work. Talent and hard work are necessary conditions for success, but not sufficient conditions.
I got a BS in Chemistry when it had little value. I got a BS in Pharmacy when it was in high demand. This is not because of my foresight but due to luck.
Each day I wake up and if my family is healthy and Barbra and I are still working, I am thankful.
