John's Story

Life My New Spouse On March 4, 2006 I married LaVonne Wilenken of Murfeesboro, Tenn. She is a Nurse Practioner Midwife. During her career she has delivered more than 4000 babies. Vonnie and I were married at the Construction Battalion Base at Camp Hueneme new Oxnard, CA. My father had shipped out for the West Pacific from Port Hueneme and I had several commands that used the base for our training. Joys of being a retired Naval Officer. She has a daughter, Natalie, 22. Natalie is starting her Junior year at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK. I really do have a "Mod Squad" family now, white, black, and blonde. We have found a new place to live in the Chino Valley, AZ.. My Late Spouse I met Rebecca at William and Mary. Came into the "Wigwam" the campus coffee shop and sat down with my roommate who was sitting with several other students. One of those students became my wife. I was later to learn that her family was from Erie and that her mother had been my mother's Girl Scout leader. I asked her out before my roommate did. We were married for 35 years. one year less than Gail and Dusty Loeffel to the day. On December 28, 2004 my dear Becky went home to be with the Lord after two years of battling cancer. My Pets One horse and two dogs. Horse is Beau. Dogs are Molly and Remmington. My Kids Jennifer, 38 this year, is a legal secretary. She just presented me...Expand for more
with my third grandson, Luka Theodore in September 2014. Her new last name is Klesic. She has been told that she looks like Tori Spelling and has been mistaken for her. She is married to an actor who has appeared on European TV. Scott, 26 is an a manintenance Engineer at an apartment complex with one son, Dean. Both of my kids have acted with me in local musicals when I lived in LA. My Job I retired from Northrop Grumman the end of July 2014. Military I join the US Naval Reserve on May 4, 1961 as a Seaman Recruit and retired on October 1, 1994 as a Captain. During that service I served aboard WWII destroyers, bowdoored LSTs, and a PCE in Cleveland. I have seen the world from Singapore to Greece. I have been a Personnelman Second Class in charge of a personnel office on an LST and the Commanding Officer of a Voluntary Training Unit as a Captain. I have played war games at the Naval War College in Newport RI and have fought in combat onboard the USS Buchanan (DDG 14) during Vietnam. Although I went to the College of WIlliam and Mary I still stand and yell proudly, Go Navy, Beat Army. I have written and produced TV shows for the Navy that included working with Captain Jackie Cooper and interviewing the Village People. I enjoyed my time in and wouldn't trade it for all the San Magoo in the PI. I retired as a Captain after 33 years in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club. Here's to shipmates!!!

Today I want to pay homage to the wives, mothers, sons, and daughters who watched their sons and daughters go off to war and never returned home. They deserve recognition on Memorial Day.
