John C.'s Story

Life I "escaped" from Michigan by joining the US Navy in the 1980s. I was employed as an Aircraft mechanic. I spent a large portion of my time in Aisa, and married a wonderful lady from Japan. We are raising two sons and currently live in the hills above Honolulu on the island of Oahu (my dream come true!) CHILDREN My eldest son has graduated and is serving in the US Navy- a chip off the ol' block head! My other sons is still in High School on Oahu. Forget what you've heard about the public school system in Hawaii. They've come a long way in the last 20 years. SPOUSE My wife was born and raised on Okinawa, Japan. Yes, we fought a very bloody battle on Okinawa from Mar-Jun in 1945. The island is dotted with WWII memorials where 4,500 American soldiers and sailors lost their lives and nearly 100,000 Japanese soldiers and Okinawan civilians committed seppuke, better known as hari-kari, rather than surrender to American forces. My tour of duty on Okinawa was a "LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE" which gave me a much better appreciation of life, liberty, and precious freedoms outlined in the U.S. Constitution. I was blessed to be on Oahu during the 50th Anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1991 and the 50th anniversary of the surrender of the Imperial Japanese Army aboard the USS Missouri i...Expand for more
n Sept of 1995: The Might Mo' was still stationed at NS Bremerton, WA, at that time. FAITH I became a Messianic Jew (Sabbath-keeping Christian) while on active duty. I had plenty of time to read the Bible and meditate on the great spiritual truths raised in the Word of God. Both my wife and I took the plunge in Baptism and our lives haven't been the same since. FUTURE GOALS One of my future goals in life is to become an evangelist in Japan and "preach the Word" to my in-laws and the rest of the people of Japan who are some of the nicest and sweetest people I've met in my life's journey. I learned how to speak Japanese (Nihon-go) and found the language surprisingly easy to pick up. EDUCATION The teacher who inspired me the most was my Freshman High School history teacher who predicted that Iran and Iraq would become the nations to watch and fret over in the coming years. He assigned me to write a research paper on the nation of Iran which, back then, I thought was a waste of time. I'll never forget what he said, "Mark my words: you'll be reading a lot about Iran and Iraq in the near future". I obtained an AA from the University of Maryland where I studied the Japanese language and culture. I earned my BS from the University of Phoenix. Currently I work at Naval Station Pearl Harbor.
