John's Story

Life huh, life. a big subject. Got a solid job, owned my own house for 5 years, had a sweet boyfriend for 7 (yeah, I'm gay), no kids but plenty of pets. All in all, life is good. School Lincoln Elementary School (K-8) Hawthorne, N.J. 1976-1984 Woodbridge Senior High School, Woodbridge N.J. 1984-1986 Onteora Senior High School, Boiceville, N.Y. 1986-1988 University of Miami, Miami, F.L. 1988-1993 university of Maryland University College (online) 2005+ College Lessee...went to University of Miami. Graduated in 5 years with a BS in Microbiology/Immunology (minors in Biology, Anthropology). Drank alot. worked part-time in a medical lab to pay for school. Made some good friends. Got really into Scuba diving (it's Miami, after all). Managed to con people into electing me president of the Microbiology/Immunology Club (geeky!) and the Scuba Club (cool!). Went by way too fast. After an 11 year layoff, I've finally gotten off my tail and gone to graduate school. Thanks to the great world of virtual learning, I'm now enrolled at the University of Maryland-University College in the Masters of Science in Biotechnology Studies program. Yes, it's a real school. Part of the University of Maryland school system, fully accredited. Also handles most of the online and overseas education for the US military. Funny h...Expand for more
ow I'm such a huge Duke basketball fan but in terms of schools I'm a Miami Hurricane and a Maryland Terrapin, two of their ACC rivals. The program is basically an MBA for the biotech world, so it fits in well with my current job and will give me more opportunities for advancement. Workplace After college got a full-time job in the Immunology monitoring lab that I worked as a student. Worked there for about 1.5 years before landing a really cool job as a research associate at the UM Diabetes Reseach Institute. Wow, did I learn alot during my time there. Flow Cytometry, Transplant Immunology, Autoimmunity, Diabetes. Managed to get some nice publications. Worked on some really cool projects with life-improving implications. You can't deny being moved meeting our first couple of islet cell transplant patients and hearing how much thier lives have improved. I worked there for 8 years, but due to lack of salary and upward mobility, had to finally move on. I'm currently a Senior Development Scientist at Beckman-Coulter, a major player in the field of medical diagnostics and testing. I work in the Miami facility, doing R+D for our flow cytometry reagents group. Been there just over 2 years, and it's a great group of people to work with. Military no military service. though did work for the VA hospital in Miami for a while.
