John Lee's Story

I hope that old friends will remember me as fondly as I remember them. My favorite way to relax is to walk the hills of this beautiful City, or workout, and at other times to socialize with friends, go to the Symphony, practice the piano. I have received a lot of inspiration from my mother, who passed away in 2006 at age 94. She taught me how to study in school, to set goals, and because she was an avid reader, I am, too. I have lived in a number of places in our beautiful country. For my university days, I lived in Waco, then in Ann Arbor, MI, and later in Berkeley, CA. I liked all of them, as each was different and interesting. Later, in my work I lived in Dallas, San Francisco, Evanston, IL, Long Beach, CA, Midland, TX, and finally settled back in San Francisco, where I now am retired, and taking care of all those things that I did not have time to do when I was working! One of my biggest surprises in life was having a brain tumor in 1989, and the resulting neurosurgery. That changed my life, as I was disabled for 7 years following that. However, eventually I found the rehabilitation that I needed and have regained the use of the right side of my body, and gone even beyond that into regular fitness training, which I enjoy very much. During this time my spiritual life grew, as I had to pray for guidance and direction as never before. I am grateful to have survived all of that, and to have been able to go back to work until I was able to reach retirement age. One of my interests over the years has been historic houses here in San Francisco. I owned 2 Victorians, and did extensive restoration on the 2nd one. Now I live in an Edwardian from 1904, and have done somewhat extensive renovation on this home also--it is an ongoing process, it seems, never ending! To be truly happy, I would be doing exactly wha...Expand for more
t I am doing right now, living where I live, and getting ready to go to one of my several annual trips back to Texas. In June my mother's family has annual Reunions in Stephenville, which I enjoy attending. I am blessed with a lot of friends and family, and am especially grateful for my brother and his wife, and their children and grandchildren. In my career, I was consistently a church organist, and sometimes also choir director and director of music. I also worked for a number of years as a music librarian in universities, which I enjoyed. I find that there is nothing more fulfilling as a musician than making music with others, and have had wonderful opportunities to work with singers, choirs, and instrumentalists. Recently I have been playing piano duets with a friend, which is very stimulating and fun. Over the years I have had a number of opportunities to travel. I have been on 4 organ study tours in Europe, the most recent one being in 2000 to the eastern part of Germany to the Bach country. We visited every church where J. S. Bach lived and worked, and also played many of the organs that he played that have been restored. A favorite city of mine is London, where I have been several times, and would like to go again. Two other trips were to Australia and New Zealand, which I enjoyed very much and would like to see again. I enjoyed seeing the famous museums in London, Amsterdam, Paris, Dresden, and others. This coming summer in 2009 I am planning a trip to Barcelona, followed by a walking tour in northern Spain on the "Camino de Santiago," which is a famous pilgrimage walk that pilgrims have been doing for centuries. I also enjoy reading about the lives and interests of friends from Lamesa, and am grateful for the heritage that we all share of growing up there and attending school and church together.
