John's Story
I left home ran away to SF CA--to go out to sail the seven seas----My friend Gunnar--came home for a visit-he use to live nearby--I t was like Aug/Sept 1949----he had a brand new 1950 olds---and 3000 in the bank--told me to follow him out to SF to join the Sailors Union of the Pacific. "SUP"---Make real good money and also get an Exemption from the Draft Board---The town had just posted a couple of local boys that had been killed ----By sailing on a Merchant Marine ship.--- All the boys around me--Felt sorta scared---After graduation---They most likely would be drafted.
During this Korean War situation---would get me OFF---So I go with him--when in SF, he went out to see right away

o be more difficult to GO OUT TO SEA---than what Gunnar had told me---Back ground investigation from Washington DC---took over 30 days back then. Had to make peace with my Mom "Gurli"----
First, she was going to call the cops on me.---After a few days, she was ok with my situation.She signed my papers
Anyway I have been in SF Bay area-ever since----and still active at 80 yrs old---Have done 53 marathons--always wanted to run the big one in Minneapolis---but the times did not fit my schedule.Not running today any more.My name
back in school days was---Johnny BEAR---(BJORN) I hated my name then.---My mom used to make baked goods
for a lot of neighbors---during rationing days--For trade or sale. her name was GULLI--
