John's Story

How does one even begin to neatly summarize all that has happened in my life since June 24, 1972! Well, first off, as suggested by the "now and then" photos, middle age does have its compensations...like finally being able to afford those boutique guitars you could only dream about as a teenager! (Note: that photo is from 2006 or 2007, so my hair is a lot grayer now, and there's less of it.) As also suggested by those photos, some things never change, like my love affair with the guitar. Any day I haven't picked one up, check for respiration and a pulse! After graduating from CK, I spent one year at Manhattan college, but then transferred to the State University of New York at Binghamton, graduating in 1977, one semester late courtesy of a drunk driver. I then attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 1980. Most of my career has been with the Social Security Administration, having been employed there since June of 1990, but earlier in my career I did enjoy brief forays into both the nonprofit sector and state government as a lobbyist and as commissioner of the Virginia state agency for the blind from 1986 to 1989. I married in 1981, had a child (Deirdre Jeanne) in 1986, divorced in 1988, entered a committed relationship in 1991, then exited that relationship in 2002. On July 31, 2014, I retired from federal service and am now very happily living in Tucson Arizona with my sweetheart Emily, her mom, my guitar collection, my amateur radio station (KW4U), and other creature comfort...Expand for more
s like our pool and hot tub. Most of my time these past few years has been taken up with volunteer activities on behalf of the American Council of the Blind, serving in leadership positions at both the national and state levels. While I find this involvement very fulfilling and rewarding, I'm thinking that 2018 is perhaps the year to dial that back a bit so that I can get immersed in the local music scene here in Tucson. I think it's time I started playing out again! As for my daughter Deirdre, she graduated from Villanova university in 2008, and married a wonderful man in June of 2016. They recently relocated from Virginia to New York city, giving me yet another reason to return for visits since I'm the only one who left the New York city area. Blessedly, Deirdre and Matthew are doing well in both their careers and personal lives. In closing, I must say that through all the years that have passed since my graduation in 1972, my memories of CK are among the happiest of my life; particularly the excellent education I received, the many great friends I made, my involvement with student council, but perhaps most of all, the CK folk club. I still have my open-reel recording of the March 10, 1972 CK folk club concert, and some cassette recordings of various rehearsal sessions.) To whomever comes upon this brief bio, I hope that you are well and that life has been kind to you. At least let me know that you visited my site; perhaps drop a line or two; would love to hear from you!
