John's Story
While I didn’t graduated from Gonzales High, but attended trough the middle of grade nine, December 1953. I would love to talk or meet anyone from that time about classes mate or the town.
We lived behind the Gonzales theater on Josephine Street, then on MacArthur. I was known as Limo and my brother Robert as Bigmo. I lettered in football in ’53 as a freshman, my brother, Robert, a junior also lettered in ‘53.
My father was the shoe department manager for Sherman’s. He was part owner of J&M shoe store until December ’53 when we had to move to Norco. Robert and I attended Destrehan High where we played football. Hart Bourque ran wild as Gonzales handed Destrehan the worst beating of the ‘54 season.
I married Josie Burguieres in 1955 and enlisted in the Air Force, spending the next 20 years in the Air Force, earning a Business Administration degree in 1974 and retired in 1975. In August 1976, was awarded a Master of Science - Accounting from the University of Southern Mississippi. I passed the CPA exam on my first sitting, only five percent achieve this. Anyone that knew me will find this a huge surprise. I was never known as a good student. In August 1976 was hired by McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. a degree. At the end of 2001, I took a 25 year retirement, enjoying gardening and landscape photography, mainly western national parks.
While in the Air Force we raised five children, while stationed in: Arkansas, England, South Dakota, Biloxi Mississippi, England, Austin Texas, Kenner (I was in Vietnam) Biloxi Mississippi
At end of 2009 my body started failing. Having abusing my body as a young man, by doing thing beyond my physical capabilities, like playing sports and lifting heavy military equipment, I started paying for my abuse. I had more testosterone than brains.
Our third child Angela Douglass passed in 2003 at age forty three in Jacksonville, Arkansas. We had three graduates from college, two from LSU and one from the University of Southern Mississippi. Pamela lives in Beaverton Oregon, Steven lives in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Johnny resides in Lake Charles, and Carla lives in Austin Texas near her daughter. My children have given us seven grand children and two great grand children so far.
In 2012 my wife of 57 years suddenly passed in our home. After five years I’m still broken hearted.
In early 2017, I make a decision to return to my roots, east Louisiana. I ended up in Kenner; not my first or second choice (Gonzales area/ LaPlace), but the best choice concerning my time line
