John's Story

As I've gotten older, I treasure my time more. By that I mean I try to be kind to others and bring people joy. With all of the world's troubles and all the hate and indifference, I feel that love and loving others is the only thing that matters or gives me joy. Forgivness and acceptance have become very important to me, both of others, and of myself. The anger I carried for so long has dissipated greatly. I try to "want" less and give more. I'm very grateful to God for His many blessings to me and my family. Still, I do not have any close friends that are near to me. My childhood friends and those I grew up with in school are mostly far away. Some are still here in Charlevoix, but they have their own lives now I guess. My wife, Marcy, and I have been together for thirty-four years now and we love each other more every day. Our three children give us much joy, and, two grandchildren, so far. Their names are Casey, and Aly, and are Carrie and Dan Kiteleys' kids. Our older son, Ryan, just received his PhD in physics at MSU (12/09). It's like having Albert Einstein in the family... go figure. Our younger son, Aaron, works with me and his grandpa making candy in Mackinaw City. We are the 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation candy makers in the Murdick clan. I've lived all over the USA (NJ, FL, GA, TN, CA), and I still love Northern Michigan, but we live in the desert (AZ) in the winter now that Marcy has retired from teaching. I was a teacher for ten years ...Expand for more
(middle school and high school social studies), and loved every student (well almost every student...ha) and every day of it. Being nominated to "Who's Who of American Teachers" by one of my former students was one of my most gratifying moments; but I left it (sadly) to help my father and mother with their store as dad can't work anymore and it's all they have. I've been very fortunate in that I've been able to make a living doing two things that I have loved. Because of my life experiences: hitch-hiking across the U.S. (when I was 17), living all over the country, growing up a boomer, etc., I feel like there is a novel in me (is that a cliche? haha), but I know I'm not the writer I wish I was. With a little help though... who knows. I don't dwell on the past but I have many fond memories of the people I have had the pleasure to know down through the years. I wish the very best for each and every one of you. Drop me a line if you get the inkling. Update (03/12/2013) Marcy and I celebrated our 35th anniversary this past December (12/14/13). My father passed Sept. 2010. Aaron and I are now partners in Aaron Murdick's Fudge (across the street from my dads former location in MC). Marcy and I now have 3 grandkids with the addition of Emma Rose Murdick (Aaron's daughter) on Sept. 23, 2010. Update (08/01/14) Our son, Ryan, and his wife, Amy, had a baby boy, Julian E. Murdick, born (04/14/14) our 4th grandchild.... Pax Omnia Pro Bono (Peace and All Things For Good)
