John's Story

When I was young, my family moved every couple of years. My Dad was a college professor and one way of getting advancement was to change colleges every few years, so that's what he did. This means that I went to lots of different schools. I was only at Springbrook for my senior year, but it was a pretty interesting time. I was mostly interested in electronics. Back then, I was planning on becoming an electrical engineer. I had electronics first period, so I always thought it was a great way to start the day. I also took French, Physics, Math, English and World History - maybe one more, but I can't remember. One of my favorite memories was when my Dad came to talk to my World History class about his experiences during World War II. Mr. Goodman arranged for his two last period World History classes to meet at the same time and my Dad got to talk to both classes for two periods. My dad had been a teenager during the Warsaw Uprisings in Poland. Needless to say, I was very proud of my Dad. My other favorite memory was of the Senior Class Trip to the Bahamas. Boy, that was a lot a fun! I was usually a loner at school, but for some reason, I found myself hanging around with a group that I hardly even saw at school. They included Rusty Randal, Janice Dearfield, Terry Carraway, and the always rowdy Bill Manning. Bill was in my English class, but the rest were just faces in the hall. I have since been back to the Bahamas twice with my wife and kids. Now, they also have fond memories of the Bahamas. After S...Expand for more
pringbrook, I went to Florida Institute of Technology for about a year and a half. It was a very expensive school, so I transferred to University of Md. I ended up changing my major from Electrical Engineering to Computer Science, and continued studying. It seemed I was on the road to becoming a perennial student, but I got my act together and finally got my degree. After graduating, I went to work in computers and had a blast. Along the way I got married to a nice Polish girl (my Dad introduced us, but that's a different story). She originally came here on a student via and her parents were still in Poland, so we got married in Poland. We have three great kids; the oldest recently got his Masters in Economics from UVA and the youngest is still in elementary school. A few years ago I went back for my Masters in Computer Systems Management. It was tough going to school in the evenings and working full-time, but it was something I really wanted. After I got my Masters, I was reading about how some men experience their mid-life crisis and go out and get an advanced degree. "WAIT A MINUTE," I thought to myself. You mean I wasted my mid-life crisis by getting a degree! I was hoping for a cute blonde and a red sports car! When I told my wife she said that I didn't need to worry. She wouldn't have let me have a girlfriend anyway. Oh well, maybe in my next life. I guess I've gotten nostalgic the last few years, so I'd like to hear for you if you knew me back then, or even if you just think you remember me.
