John's Story

Life When I left Hickman in summer of 87 I went in the USAF. It was a good choice for me at the time, not ready for full time college and with little money to pay for it. I was stationed in Missouri, Turkey, and Louisiana, and at the end of my six year enlistment I separated and moved to San Antonio, TX. My oldest sister was in the US Army, and stationed there at the time so I moved in with her and finished the remaining credits of my Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice, and graduated Magna Cum Laude, hard to believe! I was hired on by the Bexar County Sheriff's Dept (San Antonio) but then chose to go back in the USAF as an officer. I enrolled in AF ROTC at UT San Antonio, and started a second Bachelors Degree, this time in Sociology at the University of Incarnate Word, a Catholic University in San Antonio. While in college at UTSA I met Tammie, who was also in AFROTC. We started dating and were married less than a year later. We were commissioned as Second Lieutentants in 1996, and our first station was at Dover AFB. She is a Logistician, and I am in the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI). AFOSI is responsible for felony crime investigations and counterintelligence to the USAF. After Dover AFB we went to Germany for three years which we absolutely loved. We saw every nation in Western Europe and even got our Masters Degrees done while there in International Relations. My job there was as a counter-espionage case officer. We then moved to Andrews AFB, MD, where I was the commander of the AFOSI detachment, responsible for covering Andrews AFB and southern Maryland with felony level criminal investigatio...Expand for more
ns and counterintelligence operations. While at Andrews AFB we had our daughter, Rachel. We had been married 10 years at that point before having our daughter. I completed a second Masters Degree, this time in Strategic Intelligence at the National Defence Intelligence College. We then all moved back to San Antonio where we are both staitioned now. Tammie had to go to Iraq for a year which was a terrible separation. We have both been on deployments away from each other for a few months at a time (Tammie has been to the Balkans and Naples, I have been to the Balkans, Kuwait and Kyrgyzstan) but we have not been apart that long, with one of us in an active combat zone, and we of course had a daughter now. Tammie came home unhurt! In August of 2008 we were on the move again. I am now stationed at Scott AFB in Illinois outside of St Louis, MO. I am the commander of the AFOSI detachment, responsible for covering St Louis, Chicago, Milwaukee, Illinois and Wisonsin with felony level criminal investigations and counterintelligence operations that affect all AF recruiting stations, AF bases, AF Reserve Wings, and Air National Guard Wings. Tammie is now stationed in Monterey, California attending Air Command and Staff College for 15 months. Rachel for the most part has lived with her, but we all get together once a month for about a week. I saved up alot of Leave (military vacation time) prior to this move. Tammie now has an assignment to Stuttgart, Germany, and as such I will retire from the USAF as of 1 June 2010. We are looking forward to some more stability in our lives come this next summer! I hope everyone is doing well. John Nottestad
