John's Story
After graduating from Norview, I went to Old Dominion University. While there, I received a ROTC scholarship and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army upon graduation in 1977.
I met my wife Ruth, during my tour of duty in Germany in December 1985. We married in 1989 and raised two children together until her death from lung cancer in 2019. The darkest period of my life.
I also have a son who lives in Florida with his wife and six children. All together, I have seven grandchildren.
I served in various units and assignments during my military career. I was a Infantry Rifle Platoon Leader with the 82nd Airborne Division. I commanded three Mechanized Infantry Companies in the 3rd Infantry Division. My third was a Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle Company. I also served on the General Staff (G3) at III Corps and Fort Hood. My final assignment was as battalion commander US Army Garrison Fort Dix, New Jersey.
I received my Masters degree in International Politics and Economics from the University of Detroit while I was stationed in Detroit as an Army Advisor to an infantry battalion in the Michig...Expand for more
an National Guard.
Upon retiring from the Army, we moved to Texas. I worked for the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Department of Transportation and Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. I was Vice Chair of the International Registration Plan Board of Directors and I retired as the director of the Commercial Fleet Services Section, Motor Carrier Division in May 2021.
Upon retiring from the State of Texas, I decided to sell my house and move to Germany. This has been one of the wildest and most fulfilling adventure in my life. Life in Germany is like waking up in a whole new world.
My wife, Erika, and I live in the village of Drehenthalerhof with our little dog, Nina. Our village is near the town of Otterberg. We are in the KaiserslauternDistrict in the western state of Rheinland Pfalz.
I love cooking, reading, traveling and all types of music, especially jazz.
I am returning home to Norfolk to attend the Norview and Norview-Granny Class 1973 reunions. It’s going to be an exciting time for me and I hope to see many of my classmates while I am in town.
Peace, love, music and breathe!
