John's Story
Life
No point in lauding myself here (after all, I have already done
done that at my law firm website and on my personal website.) My real claim to fame is being mistaken for Fidel Martinez whenever I go to
court in Yolo County.
For statistical purposes, I graduated James Marshall High School in 1961 (without ever getting laid), departed for England for six months, and returned to commence college at Sac. State. I graduated as Student Boy President, Outstanding Senior, and Outstanding Student in Governement (damn, I said I wasn't going to gloat.)
I then went to U.C. Berkeley Law School (Boalt Hall) where I graduated with honors (I will leave it at that.) I returned to Sacramento where I have practiced law for 37 years.
In law, I have been fortunate to have taken on a number of
high profile cases, one of which landed in the United States
Supreme Court. I have been listed as one of the "Superlawyers of Northern California" and for the
last 20 years in "Best Lawyers of America" and, more significant to me, as Humanitarian of the Year
by the Sacramento County Bar Association.
My legal career somehow has led me to a new career, or at least a fun pasttime,
as a writer of legal novels. My first is entitled "The Lawyers: Class of '69" and
covers the period of our times through the lives of five
law students of the last class of the ...Expand for more
60s at U.C. Berkeley. The second novel, to premier in Feb. 2008, is set in Sacramento and is a courtroom
drama, again involving young people meeting later in life,
and is entitled "The Altar Boys."
I also have gardens on my 50 acres outside of Lincoln, California, which are
listed on the National Garden Conservancy tour and you can come visit.
I am married to a food writer and Sac Magazine Dining Diva celebrity. She has a daughter and I have a boy (38) and a daughter(32)--who appears in
my novels--and we have two grandchildren. We also travel a lot--in 2007 we
were in Mexico in the spring, Istanbul in late summer, and Mexico again (with the kids and
grandkids) for Christmas. In 2008 I will be spending a lot
of my time on book tour with "Altar Boys."
UPDATE: Well, I did the book tour which turned out to be the "I'm not dead, yet" Borders book tour of California, ending in San Diego where I underwent medical treatment at the world-famous Scrippts Clinic. Much of this, and more, you can see on my website (which is my name but this site doesn't allow it to be typed out here) especially under the section Book Tour.
Always marvel at how many of our classmates met and married their sweethearts in high school, and are still together, as well as the many in our class who stayed close -- locally and personally. Fun group.
