John's Story

Life After graduating from high school, I worked during the summer for U.S.A. Magazine in NYC, an elite journal focussed on the work of the UN. While there I got acquainted with Bill Buckley, whose work I had admired for several years. I had become a born-again Christian in 1958, esp. thru the influence of my brother Jim, who had come to faith at Princeton. I studied history, gov't, and philosophy at William & Mary in Va., and also studied a lot of Bible and theology on my own. I helped start InterVarsity there, which is thriving greatly. I met my wife Linda in that group. We have been married for forty-five years. I earned a Master of Divinity at Grace Seminary in Indiana, and a Master in Church History at Trinity Int'l Univ. in Illinois, taught history and humanities at North Chicago Community H.S. until 1980. During that period I got to know and spend time with Russell Kirk and Thomas Molnar, great conservative writers. In 1980, our family (now with three sons) moved to South FL. I taught gov't, hist., and Bible for seven yrs. at Westminster Academy in Ft. Lauderdale and became an ass't minister under Pastor D. James Kennedy at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church. From 1987-1994 I did doctoral work in gov't at the Univ. of FL, became a librarian and worked in Reference in the Main Library there. I was national chairman of the First Amendment Coalition, a campus anti-political- correctness movement. I worked for two years for US Congressman Dr. Dave Weldon of Melbourne, and then worked in county and municipal gov't in the Gainesville area. We moved to central FL in 1999, and I have taught here in high schools and part-time in two colleges (history, gov't, and philosophy). stian academy in Eustis, FL. My wife Linda has retired from teaching high school Latin in Ocala. Our three sons are married, with six grandchildren, all in FL. We live about midway between Ocala and Orlando, in northern Lake County. School At Newark High School, I didn't feel particularly inspired by any of my teachers, but I did especially respect Miss Comstock, with whom I studied Geometry. I put a lot of effort into organizing and leading the Student Union of the Republican Right (promoting conservative ideas a la National Review magazine), which had a rocky relationship with the school administration. Just before my senior year, I trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior, but I didn't become a very consistent Christian until I was in college. I enjoyed most of the things I did in high school (singing, drama, student government, putting out the "S.U. Tribune," winning a Rotary trip to the United Nations). If I could do it over, I would study harder (especially languages) and be a better Christian. College At college at William & Mary in Williamsburg, my most inspiring teacher was Professor Morton Frisch, a Jew who taught political science, and later became my advisor when I started a Ph.D. program in government in Illinois. I helped organize the Christian Fellowship (which became an InterVarsity chapter), and fell for Linda Cook of Danville, VA (my future wife) whom I met in that group. InterVarsity is now the largest religious group on campus there. If I had it to do again, I'd be a better Christian and study harder. I studied theology and political science at the graduate level in two seminaries and three universities, and out of that work has come two writing projects I am working on in my retirement, both having to do with Christianity and the historiography of the American Founding.
