John's Story

Life I live in Seattle Washington where I am a courier and a massage therapist. I totally dig both of my jobs and can truthfully say that life has progressively gotten better for me the older I've gotten. I had to work both long and hard to get to the point of self acceptance and inner contentment that I enjoy today. I am a happily single gay man with no desire for LTR. I went to Seminary and was married for a while during graduate school in New Orleans ( upon the advice of a church counselor who said it would cure my evil desires towards men), but came out as gay at age 24 after my divorce and moved to Atlanta. I lived in Atlanta for 7 years before tiring of the heat and religious conservatism of the South. I headed out to Seattle 22 years ago. It was a big gamble as I knew no one here and had only visited it for a couple of days a few years prior to my move. It was a very good choice and revel in the cool weather, gorgeous scenery, and social liberalism found here. I can see snow capped peaks from my window and can walk anywhere day or night in safety, which is quite a change from Jackson as it has become. One of the best things about Seattle, other than the 70 degree summers, is that I can be totally out and have lots of straight male friends at work and in my clubs who are totally cool with me being gay, something you would rarely find in Mississippi. I am very active in Toastmasters, both in a gay and in a mostly straight group. I have won 2 trophies in contest with my humorous speeches. My life has been transformed by my social involvement in my 2 TM clubs. I got into landsc...Expand for more
ape gardening for about 5 years professionally, got a lot of press on my work, but I couldn't compete with the Mexicans. I still garden with the neighbor across the street and have a blast at it. I have some photos of my much publicized garden in my photo album. Photos of my garden made it into Sunset Magazine, Gardens,Decks and Landscapes ( cover feature), a 7 page spread in the local Sunday newspaper magazine, and in the coffee table book, Shocking Beauty by Thomas Hobbs.I didn't make much money in this venture, but got lots of artistic fulfillment and recognition. I am very well read and did an intensive self education program a few years back when I read over 1000 college level books in 4 years. I tired of reading books, but listen to audiobooks as I walk and drive in my car at work. I am still close to my gay best friend who grew up across the street from me in Jackson. I was totally nonathletic in school, but nowadays workout regularly at the gym and keep myself very fit. I found out about a couple of my classmates from Provine who were gay, but only after leaving Jackson. I was lucky to escape getting HIV, but lost 27 friends to the plague. I know of only one other person who has lost as many friends and family member as myself...32!! I am very well traveled, am close to my siblings, and will never visit Jackson again as it is too depressing to see what has happened to West Jackson in the past 25 years. I do have very fond memories of the Jackson I grew up in. Thanks for reading and I only hope that you are as happy and as at peace with yourself as I have become:) John
