John's Story

Life I have lived in the Dallas area since 1985 with the exception of 15 months in Scottsdale, Arizona in the mid 1990s. It is home and I have lots of friends here but I still miss the Northeast and I regularly think fondly my hometown of Huntington. I remain an avid photographer, also write some and am a human rights activist. I produced nearly 100 podcast episodes of "John Selig Outspoken" and stopped several years ago. I hope to get back into podcasting in the near future. When I see prejudice and hate towards any group I do what I can to be of assistance. I was deeply involved with AFS International Programs for years and was a chapter president, area rep, host parent over a 15 year period in the 80s and 90s. Coming Out In 1989 and early 1990 my marriage to my former wife fell apart. After she wanted out I finally admitted to myself, then my former wife, our son and then others that I was gay. The feelings have been there since early in elementary school but I just tried to ignore them. I married my former wife for love but the romance wasn't what she deserved. We divorced in 1991. Going through puberty at age 37 was quite an experience. Never would I have expected to become a human rights activist in the LGBT community and also write about and photograph the LGBT community. My former wife and I were in articles in the Dallas Morning News (picked up in papers around the country) and in an article on the front page of the Sunday New York Times to help other couples in mixed-orientation marriages. We also appeared on both the Rolonda and Donahue TV programs. W...Expand for more
e have remained friendly throughout the desolation of our marriage and ever since. My Husband Rodolfo and I marriend in Toronto in April 2004. We met in December 2001 and decided to get married in Canada before it was legal in the States. He was born in Mexico and grew up in Chicago. He is an amazing person and I am the luckiest man alive to have him as my husband. His degree is in computer graphics and without him I would never have a website or a podcast, not to mention learned to use Photoshop. Whenever tech issue arises it is sure handy to have a techie to fix whatever is wrong. My Son My son Nathaniel turned 40 in January 2018. He is the greatest joy in my life (along with my husband, Nathaniel's wife,Doris, and our grandson, of course). Nathaniel and I are especially close. His mom and I divorced when he was 12 and he lived with me (she was and remains a great mom to him). He has a big heart and a great sense of humor, like his dad, Nathaniel is interested in people from around the world and he spent his junior year of high school as an AFS student to Argentina. Nathaniel, our daughter-in-law and grandson are living in Nova Scotia. We don't get to see them often enough. My Career I spent most of my career in marketing after obtaining my MBA in Marketing from The University of Chicago. I have done marketing in the restaurant, automotive repair, public transit and architectural signage industries. Now that I am retired I am substitute teaching, which I find eye-opening, at times frustrating and extremely rewarding. I am also taking tons of photographs.
