John's Story

Life While I attended John Adams, my family lived nearby on Avon Avenue. It wasn't until my freshman year at Case that I finally met a girl (who also lived on Avon Avenue) who eventually became my wife (we've been married 44 years). Noreen Mobily and I met at a bus stop (we were both going to our part-time jobs) and it was love at first sight. Aside from my having an auto accident on the way to pick her up for our first date, everything has been great. We have three grown sons and five grandkids. We lived in Rocky River for 40 years and are presently living in the Aberdeen Court cluster home development. Noreen's major hobbies are landscaping and reading. I also enjoy reading (mystery novels) and all kinds of sports. I golf regularly and we both walk for exercise and enjoyment. School I attended Harvey Rice elementary school at E. 116th and Buckeye Road. The thing I remember most about Harvey Rice was the adjacent library and the gardening classes taught by Herb Meyers. At the end of the school year we would harvest our vegetables and take them home for good eating. I attended Audubon Junior High where I remember the art classes taught by Mr. Ashdown, sitting outside under the trees, across from Woodland Hills Park. I attended John Adams high school from 1954 to 1958. While I spend most of my time working to keep up my grades (straight A's meant free tickets to Indians games!), I did find time to play varsity baseball, serve as President of the SMADA Club under...Expand for more
John Spezaferro, and socialize with a great group of friends. College After graduating from Adams in 1958, I planned to attend the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. However, I lthen earned that my need to wear eyeglasses would preclude my attending Annapolis. Fortunately, I was able to get a full scholarship at Case Institute of Technology. This turned out great with a number of my friends from Adams (Terry Adams, Harry Fox, Richard Dimery, Fred Gemlick, Harvey Algeri) also attending Case. I graduated in 1962 with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering. Workplace After graduating from Case in 1962, I joined staff at the NASA Lewis Research Center. During my career at NASA, I worked on both the Apollo space program and the Aeronautics propulsion program, specializing in computer simulation of advanced propulsion systems. At the time I retired from NASA in 1995, I was the Strategic Planning Manager for the the Aeronautics Program. After leaving NASA, I spent a year working on my golf game and do-it-yourself home projects. Then, I rejoined the workforce, working part-time at a Rocky River real estate appraisal firm where I was responsible for computerizing their office. Over the course of three years, we were able to expand from two old PC's running DOS to twelve, fully networked, Windows-based machines with customized software that greatly reduced the time and effort required to generate appraisal reports. I retired, for good, at the end of 1999.
