John's Story
Life
After graduating from Southwest Texas State University, I married Carol Dreiss from Comfort, Tx. We have three grown kids. Carol was a speech therapist. After college I made a living as a pilot (military and commercial). I retired as a Colonel from the Air Force Reserve's in 1996. I retired as a Captain for Continental Airlines in '06. Carol and I travel some and spend time on our Hill Country ranch. If you ever get by the Kingwood or Comfort area please come by for a visit. I received a B.S. from Southwest Texas and a M.S. from Abilene Christian Univ. We've lived in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and California.
College
I majored in Industrial Arts (shop) with a high school teaching certificate at Southwest Texas. I was a Distinguished Graduate from the Air Force ROTC program and received an officer's commission (1969). I instructed photo labs and was a dorm counselor my junior & senior year. I also was president of the Arnold Air Society (ROTC fraternity) my senior year. I really had a good time attending SWT with lots of wonderful friends and memories. Had I not signed a contract with the Air Force ____ I'd still be there. Later I took 24 hrs. of undergraduate courses in business. I then earned a Masters Degree in Human Relations and Management from Abilene Christian Univ. (1976) while in the Air Force living in Abilene.
Workplace
After 10yrs. in the Air Force, I went to work as a pilot for Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) out of San Diego. I was furloughed in '79 and was hired by Continental Airlines (based in Houston). I was furloughed again in '80. From 80 to 87 I did some corporate flying (Hobby Airport,Houston,Tx), Air Force Reserves (Barksdale AFB, Louisiana), and 5yrs. of active duty Air Force (March AFB, California). In '87 I returned to Continental Airlines out of Houston. I was an MD-80 Captain for t...Expand for more
he next 17 years. My last year and a half at Continental I was a B-737 Captain. In 2006___ I had reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 and had to retire.
Military
I earned an officer's commission from the Air Force ROTC program at Southwest Texas in 1969. I earned my Air Force pilot wings in 1970 at Vance AFB, Enid, Oklahoma. I then trained to fly KC-135 aircraft at Castle AFB, Merced, California. KC-135s are used to refuel airplanes in the air. From 1970-1976 I flew KC-135's out of Dyess AFB, Abilene, Texas. For two years of that time (72-74) my squadron was deployed to Southeast Asia in support of the Vietnam War. From 1976-1979 I worked as an evaluator pilot on the Strategic Air Command's flight evaluation team( Barksdale AFB, La). I got out of the Air Force in 1979. I joined the Air Force Reserves in 1981 flying the new KC-10 out of Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. The KC-10 is a DC10-30 that can be refueled and can refuel aircraft in the air along with carrying people and cargo. In 1982 I rejoined the active duty Air Force flying KC-10's out of March AFB, Riverside, California. My last job at March AFB was the 9th Air Refueling Squadron's Operations Officer. In 1987 I again left the active duty Air Force. In 1988 I rejoined the Air Force Reserves flying KC-10's out of Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. In 1994 our unit was moved to McGuire AFB, New Jersey. I continued to commute from our home in Texas to complete my squadron duties and retired from the reserves in 1996. The last two years I served as the Squadron Commander and retired as a Colonel. I ended up with 15 years active duty and 16 years in the reserves. After growing up in Kermit and never traveling anywhere ____I was able to satisfy that desire ! I feel blessed to have had such fun careers (both the Air Force and the Airlines) and got to call them "work".
