John's Story
I attended NTCI for four years, started in the music form and then moved to Leaside High School when my parents moved to Leaside. It was more enjoyable. After high school I went to Toronto Teacher’s College where I met Lorna Smith who was Miss CNE that year and a model. We had a whirlwind romance and married on April 1st 1961. Yes it was April Fool’s Day but it was our first opportunity as we were both teachers in the terrible Regent Park area. Following that I began going to U of T, taught at High Park Forest School which operated 6 days a week from May to the end of October and then continued at U of T’s Glendon Campus before it became York University
After graduation I accepted a fellowship at the University of Alberta and stayed on completing a Ph.D. program. n. Our daughter died shortly after birth but Mark lived on.
We returned to Canada in the early 70’s when I accepted the position as Principal at Renison College at the University of Waterloo. I didn’t know that the College was in trouble. I fired people, survived riots and protests and turned it around. I resigned the principalship but stayed on until I retired. In the meantime Lorna and I got involved in real estate and started a consulting business.
We traveled a great deal, bought a house in Key West, built a villa in Spain and visited more than 80 countries. I became a travel writer and wrote more than 300 articles for magazines.
Our son David took over the business and has developed it into Canada’s largest supplier of industrial and personality tests. Mark is married to a bright woman who has a joint appointment at MIT and Harvard. They have one daughter and live in a nice house outside of Boston.
Lorna and I live in Waterloo and have a home on the river in Owen Sound. We spend most of the good weather there.
