John's Story

Life I left Illinois at age 19. I moved to Colorado to persue a career in music. I have played for some "name acts", but have made a much better living than most had figured I could (including, but not limited to Coach King!...ha!). I spent nearly 20 years in road bands touring the nation. I've seen most of the states of the USA, and some forgien countries. I traveled overseas doing DOD (department of Defence) tours, similar to the USO. I have been on several albums and CDs, some better than others, but all have been learning experences for me. At forty, after two failed marriages (being gone that much is hard on relationships) I quit touring, and bought a home. I live in a converted school house that was built in 1884 in Loveland Colorado now. I run a band locally, that plays 3 nights of the week, and have taken the first (as my Father would have called it ) "straight job" I have ever held outside of the music business. I am a Code Enforcement Officer for a small town near Loveland. I am currently working on putting together a recording studio with one of the members of my band in Greeley Colorado. I have twin daughters, 23, and 4 Grand Children (quit that girls, you're making me old!), that are the loves of my life. My life has had some bumps and knocks along the way, but all in all, it has worked out for me better than even I had hoped for. At 47, I am fairly proud of my career in music and...Expand for more
I'm happy with my life as a whole. What more could a could a musician from Champaign/Mahomet Illinois have asked for?? GO BULLDOGS! (PS Thanks Glen Fleming and Steve Thompson for turning me on to Country Music....even before it was "cool"! Workplace I started playing drums at 11 years old, and do to this day. I joined a band as soon as I arrived in Colorado that was together for 12 years. I have played in several since. Most of them were road bands (traveling bands), but several have been house bands (one reoccuring place to play). I did nothing but music, until I landed a job as Music manager in a club in Colorado, were I have both managed the band as well as playing music for 12 years now. That's a record for a musician, I think! I also work part time for the small town where the club is located, in a municipal governemnt job. It is the only other job I have had outside of the music business. As my Father would have called it a "regular job". I finally got a little tired of traveling, and this situation seems to fit me the best, allowing me to stay in the music biz without traveling. I still do some recording when time allows, but the club and the municipal job take up more and more of my time these days. It turns out that all of the football coachs, school counselors, and even my Father were wrong. One CAN make a living playing music! Mom got it right though...God bless Bettie J.!
