John's Story

Life Life... I try to be authentic. As time goes on, I'd say I've become more authentic, especially when I got out of school and didn't have to take a bunch of classes about things I had absolutely no interest in. My goal in life is to work with children, perhaps open my own Youth Center that exposes kids to the arts. My music has been a huge part of my life. A band that grew out of high school friends, called Just For Sundae, was my first serious gig. Playing the Worcester area at first and then expanding outward. That group dissolved. I did some booking of all-ages shows at a Bar in Webster called Funny Bones. That situation also dissolved. I joined a group called Lackadaisic, which had an ever-rotating line-up, and eventually rotated out of it. Stole the drummer and a couple other coffeehouse musicians and started The Overtones. Won Best Rock Act in the Wormtown Sound Awards of 2002. That group disintegrated and I started playing with Snakes & Ladders. And I also played in a group called Das Happening, for a short time when they were first starting out. I've also appeared on numerous local records and demos with these groups and as a guest on other worcester area artists' projects. for a complete listing of my musical adventures and other life adventures, be sure to check out fashiondisaster (dot org) When my Dad died, I went on a hiatus from performing and never really went back. I met a wonderful girl named Sarah through our mutual interests in Photography and moved out to the Chicago area to be with her in early 2007. Life has been pretty good here, so far :) School Started school in Bedford, moved to Dudley in the middle of 2nd grade... continued through high school there. Went to UMASS... twice ...School wasn't for me. I stayed in school and picked my college solely because of the marching band....Expand for more
College I went to UMASS Amherst, twice. The first time around it was because I wanted to be in the band there.. and I was in the band there, and it was good. The second time was mostly for the room and board that I didn't have to pay for (right away)... and it sucked pretty bad. I love the area out there, and the people I met while I was there, but school was not for me. Workplace Every summer since high school I had worked at Camp Foskett in Charlton... as well as through the three summers after college semesters and the year off in between those attempts at college. In the year off between college attempts I worked at Sears in Auburn. That work for the Y also led to Rock wall instruction and After-School day care at a school in Sturbridge. Then I got a job offer at a Telecommunications Equipment Reseller. I was to start their eMail marketing campaign... something I had experience with because of the band. The network administrator gave his notice the day I started, though, so I quickly became the administrator of the entire network. I stayed there for more than two years and hired a staff of cool people around me. It turned into a sinking ship that often threw people overboard, and I was one of those people. I worked after-school day care for a different YMCA, while working nights and weekends at Sears in N. Attleboro and doing freelance photography for the Woonsocket Call for about a year before I switched to a bigger better YMCA where they had a ropes course and a team-building program that runs three seasons out of the year. I stayed at that Y for about 5 years. I moved to the Chicago area in 2007 and started working at another YMCA doing various things, including working at their rock wall and for the JCYS and some other organizations, doing team-building in a few Chicago high schools and at other teams courses.
