Kevin's Story
I enjoy restoring and riding old motorcycles and my idea of "Zen" is to throw my watch to the ground (perhaps stomping on it a bit) without caring what day it is or where I have to be and touring across country without any clear destination in mind. I'm a Buddhist at heart, so it pains me to say that although I love my work that I work too much and too often "minutes matter" and, at its most extreme, "moments matter."
I've been clean and sober for 20 years, so the bar scene doesn't do much for me. I do enjoy listening to live music, however, particularly when I visit my grown-son, Forest, down in New Orleans. At the same time, I'm not a crusader against alcohol so I don't have a problem with others drinking (as long as they're not riding or driving--I teach motorcycle safety courses)!
I'm a very spiritual person who strives for an "attitude of gratitude" on a daily basis. I do my best to live in and be thankful for...Expand for more
the moment because
"yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery, and the present a gift." I love life and strive to see its beauty.
Since running away from Omaha at 17 there's been so very much that's happened of course. I earned three advanced degrees--from the U. of MN, U. of OR, and UC Berkeley--and currently consider myself a well-educated 51-year-old leftist biker who commutes more than 600 miles weekly from my hobby farm in rural western Wisconsin to the Twin Cities to teach college sociology, journalism, and motorcycling classes.
I love my job and work tirelessly to provide a voice for the poor, downtrodden, and otherwise disenfranchised people in this world. Yet, despite how passionate and intense I am about my "causes," I don't take myself too seriously. For example, I've been a vegetarian for 36 years and yet I wear full leathers--obviously some contradictions here! As such, I'm the first to laugh at myself.
