John's Story
Okay, okay........some people think I am from New York, some from Texas, some from California, most can't figure our my multi-accent. I don't really have any "roots" where many people refer to as "back home".
I was born in 1954 in Kansas City, Missouri, lived there for one year, from 2-3 years old we lived in Oklahoma City; then on to St. Louis from 3-6 years old (that's when I became a Cardinal baseball fan); onto to Dallas for 1st - 6th grade; moved to Costa Mesa, CA for 7th - 9th grade (had hoped to play football or basketball at UCLA); then from the beach to snow when I 15-21 years old in Ballston Lake, N.Y., and finally back to the Dallas area when I was 21 years old.
Why so many moves? My Father began working for Norton Company the year I was born in 1954, and each move was a promotion for him.
The reason I have four high school listed on my profile is; I would have attened Lake Highlands H.S. in Dallas if we had not moved to CA; I would have attended Costa Mesa H.S., however we moved across Harbor Blvd. when I was in 8th grade so I then attended Estancia H.S.; and then we moved to N.Y. where I graduated from Shenendehowa in 1973. That high school name was interesting to not only learn to spell, but to pronounce it correctly.
My Father passed away from a heart attack at age 51 (I was 21 years old) and little did I know that I would inherit his bad heart history and I suffered my heart attack at age 45 (my son was only 5 years old).
I moved my 87 year Mother to Waxahachie last year from TN. and she lives in a Seniors Apartment complexe about two miles from my office.
I've had five knee surgeries from football, both shoulders operated on twice (basketball and tennis), and found out this past year that I have degeneration in my spine and that's why back is so bad.
My son is 15 years old now...Expand for more
, is 6 feet tall and it appears he may pass my height of 6'4". He prefers basketball and track over football; as I preferred football and basketball.
My wife, Roxanne is a Psychotherapist in private practice in Waxahachie. She's a Okie, graduated from OSU, but was born in Wyoming.
I have my M.B.A. and have been the Executive Director of the Ellis County Children's Advocacy Center in Waxahachie, Texas since 2001. We have lived in Palmer since 1989 and my son attends Palmer ISD where he is a freshman this year.
I worked in North Dallas as a CFO at a large non-profit corporation (located in Dallas and San Antonio) for years until my heart attack on December 31, 1999. I resigned my position about a year after the heart attack as "my life direction" had been changed. My Heart Doc diagnosed my biggest stressor as my 45 mile drive in traffic to work, the traffic in Dallas is terrible.
I met my wife at Terrell State Hospital where she was a Social Worker and I was an Administrator. Working there for those nine years was the best job I ever had and really enjoyed the hospital setting. I would have remained there, but saw the writing on the wall when the new administration was hired in 1988.
We hope to retire to Arkansas after my son graduates high school; possibly to Hot Springs or Eureka Springs where we have 10 acres on the White River there.
We have had a long line of pets; peaked in the mid 90's with two horses, three dogs and pot-bellied pig named Kramer from Seinfeld). Kramer thought he as a dog and wanted to be best friends with our two Siberian Huskies, but it always seemed that their attitude was, "You're a pig!"
The moves from state to state were interesting at the time. It was fun to grow up with the Dallas Cowboys from their first year, live ten minutes from the beach (loved body surfing).
