Jon's Story
Life
After leaving SMN, I went JCCC, then K-State. Earned a BS in Milling Science and Management and played in the K-State Jazz Band. Went to Montreux Jazz Festival with them in '76 and '78. won award for Outstanding Jazz Soloist in '78. Sort of ironic for someone who was kicked out of band at SMN, huh? Went on to be a pro musician in KC and worked at David Beatty Stereo. Was offered a Grad Assistantship at Emporia State from 80-82 and got a Masters in Music Performance, then moved to Denver. Gigged there a year and in 1984 landed a gig with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra from 1984-86, touring the entire U.S., Canada, Caribbean, and some of Europe. Quite an experience! ll for Ronald Reagan in 1984, among other cool gigs. We played about 300 one-nighters a year! Also got to back Mel Torme for two weeks and played at the Waldorf Astoria for the 50th anniversary of the Ritz Cracker - met Alan King, Frank Gifford and other celebs. Went to work for ConAgra in 1986 as a Manager of a Flour Mill in Omaha, switched to become a LAN Engineer at ConAgra, where I have worked since 1990, designing, building, and maintaining computer networks across the U.S.
Am now divorced with 2 beautiful kids - Jon, Jr. and Christine. Started playing the trombone again recently after a 10 year hiatus. Will maybe explore what little jazz scene Omaha has to offer.
