Jon's Story

Life Well, Here's the short & long of it: I've finally grown up! I began my life in Boulder City, NV (i.e.Mayberry) in 1965 as the fourth child of Otto & Marie. I got to live in a big brick house at the top of town. I was a bit of an outsider, but I still think that my most memorable connections lie with those I went through my early years with. It was a simpler time. My folks divorced when I was 13(along with most of my hometown, it seems). This led to several high schools(Clark High in Las Vegas, NV & Sandpoint High in Sandpoint, ID), as well as my education as a drinker & substance user. I managed to keep it "under control" enough to graduate high school. I guess I was good at partying because I managed to get through a 4 year Theatre Arts degree at UNLV in Las Vegas without too much grief. I was/am a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and I held positions of Chaplain(2 years), Secretary(1 year), and House manager. Talk about king of the party, try running a frat house. I got my degree and then I had to go into the real world. I found that I feared failure; then I found that I also feared success. I did what any good party monster would do, I found an all-consuming addiction, and buried my head(life?!?) in the sand of self-indulgence. My drug of choice became Methamphetamine and I pursued it with my all for the next 15 years. Many of the months and years were spent in various jails and I even did some prison time(over 4 years!) in Idaho. I tried to think of myself as a "good" drug addict; not a thief, or user of people/women, etc. It was a weird combination. I tried to live up to the honor code of my fraternity while walking through a dark world of addiction. More often than not, this led to me being the target of the more vicious element of the drug world and once again I felt like an outsider in the world I was in. My prison sentence was 1-5 years for possession of $20 of Meth. It really relates to a sentence for manufacturing that they couldn't p...Expand for more
rove. I did 2.5 years before parole, messed up parole(high 19 out of 21 months) and then finished(topped out) my time. I did just over 4 years on a 1-5 year sentence. You would think that this would straighten me out. No way! I went right back to smoking Meth. Shortly after my second release, I met my Heather. She was also involved in Meth. We began a very chaotic relationship that ended with Heather pregnant and wanting nothing to do with me. On December 25th of 2004, Heather gave birth to fraternal twin daughters. They were 2 months premature, but born clean of meth. None-the-less, Health and Welfare took our children away. I tried to stop using without success. Heather checked into rehab. We weren't together. I was a wreck. Then God stepped in. I got picked up on a traffic warrant the day before my house was to be raided. I started going to church as a way to get out of my cell for a while. I guess my experiences at Grace Community Church in Boulder City and as a Chaplain for my fraternity had planted some seeds. I dared jesus Christ to make me not love Meth so much. I couldn't even say I didn't want to keep using, that's how deep my addiction was. I asked Christ into my heart. The amazing thing is that it worked!!! I have been entirely free of meth use since that day!!! I am now going to Boise State University to obtain a Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies. I attend two churches here in Boise as well as participating in two Celebrate Recoveries; one of which I am in leadership in. I am the worship leader at one,as well as leading worship at a weekly bible study in my home. It will be two years this coming July(2007). My children are home and doing well. I have another little girl on the way. Health & welfare closed our case in May, 2007. The judge said that she never would have believed it if she didn't see it herself. Heather and I have been married since March 15th, 2006. God is Real! God is Good! God keeps His Promises! Praise God!!!
