Jonathan Holljes:

CLASS OF 1976
Baltimore, MD

Jonathan's Story

Leaving BL was bittersweet for me. Bitter in that it was my school and I was part of my class for the 5 years I attended and I departed and rather abruptly too! People like John Friedman and Dave Meyers and Randy Mathai and numerous others I lost touch with almost entirely after leaving BL. Bitter also was that in hindsight I think the school was not challenging me as much as it could and I had grown slack in my interest in school and was headed for trouble with my attitude. Sweet is that I did attend McDonogh my senior year and the reasons for it were economic for my parents but the result of it made a huge difference in my life. At the time my dad was paying Graduate tuition at Johns Hopkins for my older brother, Boston University for my older sister, Bryn Mawr for a younger sister, Friends for my other younger sister and 2 tuitions for myself and my younger brother at BL. For the entering class in Fall of 1975 McDonogh went Co-Ed. They also had a bus service and served lunch in the cafeteria every day. To my Parents this looked like heaven because no longer did: 4 kids need to be dropped off or picked up at 3 locations. 20 lunches did not have to be made. All home turf activities would be at 1 location But the kicker ...Expand for more
was a progressive discount per child after the first. With 4 kids the total tuition savings in 1975 dollars was have been enough to buy new cars and that is exactly what Dad did. Sweet also in that the wrestling coach made my brother and I attend a top wrestling camp that summer at TSU and the coaches pushed my brother and I hard even though were arguably the biggest guys on the teams in both wrestling and football. We have both been told that we helped move the needle at McD to make the school a Wrestling powerhouse and to move up to at the time MSA A conference. What I know for sure is without the switch to McD I would not had been driven to improve as I did. I was acknowledged several times as the most improved in both Football and Wrestling as well as academically. Nothing against BL but I was not thriving there and that change gave me a fresh start. I credit that fresh start with allowing me to get into University of Richmond and to be able to compete at Division I sports in Football and Wrestling. But the biggest SWEET is I met and fell in love with Jeni my bride of almost 39 years. I would love to comeback and reconnect with some of my classmates but it was a very abrupt change for me although it did me a lot of good!
