Jonathan's Story

In October 1984, I enlisted in the US Army Reserve as an Enlisted Psychological Operations Specialist (i.e. propaganda development and dissemination). I went to the Defense Language Institute and graduated from the Russian Basic Course in Feb 1986, then from PSYOPS Specialist Advanced Individual Training in July 1986. In Fall 1986 I started college and ROTC at California State University, Sacramento. I graduated in December 1988 with a BA in Goverment, and a minor in Russian Language. Then in February 1989, I went on active duty as a Military Intelligence Officer in the Army. I graduated from the Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course, Ft. Huachuca, AZ in Summer of 1989, then went to Ft. Hood, TX in August 1989. At Ft. Hood, I served as Battalion Intelligence Officer (S-2) of the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, then as Interrogation Platoon Leader, A Company, _Can't remember the Battalion just now_, then as Assistant Operations Officer (S-3), 312th Military Intelligence Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division. Then I went back to Fr. Huachuca in Fall 1993 for the Military Intelligence Officer's Advanced Course. When that was complete in Feb 1994, I went to Ft. Benjamin Harrison for the Recruiting Officers' Course, and then went to command the US Army Recruiting Company, Akron Ohio. In 1995 I returned to the Army Reserve as a Chaplain Candidate and entered Ashland Theolgical Seminary, Ashland, Ohio to pursue a Master of Divinity degree. con in the Charismatic Episcopal Church, and became Vicar of St. Timothy's Charismatic Episcopal Church in Eugene, Oregon. In January 1999, I was ordained a Priest and in July of 1999 I went back onto active duty as a chaplain in the Army. I served at Fort Bragg, NC as Battalion Chaplain of the 530th Supply and Services Battalion from July 1999 until December 2001. I served at Camp Garryowen, Munsan, Republic of Korea from Jan 2002 utnil Jan 2003 as Squadron Chaplain of the 4th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment. From Jan 2003 to June 2003 I attended the Chaplains' Captains Career Course at Fort Jackson, South Caroline, then went to Madigan Army Medical Center, Fort Lewis, WA (south of Tacoma) where I completed a four-quarter residency in Clinical Pastoral Education. In July 2004 I went to the 47th Combat Support Hospital at Fort Lewis, and I served there until July 2007. During that time, I served a one-year deployment with the 47th CSH in Mosul, Iraq from October 2005 to October 2006. In July 2007 I transferred to Fort Gillem, GA (southeast of Atlanta) where I served as Brigade Chaplain of the US Army 2nd Recruiting Brigade. In July 2008 I was transferred again to Headquarters, US Army Forces Central Command, at Fort McPherson, GA (west of Atlanta). So much for the professional and educational history. Now for the family history. While I was at the Defense Language Institute, I met Rebeka Sturman who was then in the Air Force and was taking the Korean Basic Course. We married in December 1986 and are still married. We have three children, Denise (19 yrs old), Jonathan Paul (17 yrs old) and Naomi (14 yrs old).
