Joseph's Story
I lived in Whitefield from 1944 to 1951. My father was the minister at the Baptist church. Although I use my first name (Joseph) now, many people in Whitefield remember me as Davie (my middle name). This is what my parents called me, to avoid the "Big Joe, Little Joe" stigma.
I didn't graduate from Whitefield High School. My family moved to Massachusetts when I was in the fifth grade, but my parents loved Whitefield so we came back every summer for a month or so. We renewed old acquaintances and made new ones and thoroughly enjoyed our time in Whitefield.
From Massachusetts we moved to New Jersey, where I finished High School and joined the Navy in 1958
and completed Radio school in Norfolk, VA. From there I went to NAS Sanford (Florida) for a tour of shore duty before being reassigned to sea duty on board the USS Rooks (DD-804). oss-trained into the Precision Measuring Equipment AFSC at Lowry AFB in Denver, CO. The assignments I had in the Air Force took me to McChord AFB (Washington), Tyndall AFB (Florida), Ramstein AB (Germany), Keflavik Naval Station (Iceland) and back to Lowry AFB as a technical instructor. My last job in the Air Force was as a Supervisor of Advanced Training Courses at the Precision Measuring Equipment school at Lowry AFB. I retired as a Master Sergeant in 1979.
After my military career I entered the civilian job market, enjoying various engineering positions with Storage Technology Corporation, Control Data Corporation, Kodak, and Westinghouse. In 1994, after a year of independent computer consulting work, I accepted a position with Richwood Pharmaceuticals as Information Systems Manager, and then moved on to an equivalent position with Honeywell.
In 2001 I retired to Florida. I still do some computer consulting now and then but mainly I'm just enjoying my retirement and all my pets (14 cats and 2 dogs).
