Joseph Gauthier:

CLASS OF 1953
Los angeles, CA

Joseph's Story

Hi to all of those BFMI classmates and graduates who are still around. What a great school and educational experience we all had. To this day, I still remember all the great classes and how much we learned as opposed to the public schools that just whisk you through. I was at Black-Foxe from September, 1944 to June, 1948 and lived in the dormitory the entire time. I would have been in the June, 1953 graduating class had I stayed, but I moved on and attended John Burroughs Junior High and Los Angeles High School. I was in the Class of Summer, 1953, graduating on June 19th. I went to Occidental College for my first two years, moved to Newport Beach in 1955 and spent one year at Orange Coast College prior to enrolling at UCLA for my Junior and Senior years. I joined Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and was in the Class of 1958. I enlisted in the California National Guard, 40th Armored Division, down by the Coliseum off the Harbor Freeway. After two years, including 6 months Active Duty Training, I moved to San Francisco and finished my final four years in the U.S.A.R. 15th Corps Headquarters at the Presidio. I was honorably discharged in Jun...Expand for more
e, 1964. I moved back to L.A. in 1964 and remained there until 1976 when I moved to Reno, Nevada with a wife and two small children. I have lived here for 39 years. I still have my yearbooks from 1946, 1947, and 1948. In those days, my roommates next door were Ronnie Burns and Mike Arquette. We also had Enrique Alvarez who was the son of the famous Mexican Actress, Maria Felix, and he died at age 62. The Getty brothers were students at that time as well as Claude Binyon, son of the founder of the casino in Las Vegas. I was a guide-on bearer for my company headed by Captain Jim Doran. We all remember Colonel Hufford and Major Harry Gaver, at least I do. One of my greatest teachers was Mrs. Hopkins for English. I can still remember diagramming sentences on the blackboards after class. We even had spelling and handwriting, remember? A far cry from what exists today in our public schools. Today, I still appreciate the discipline and training as it has made me a better person with good habits and character. Occasionally, I get out my yearbooks and enjoy all of the wonderful pictures and memories. God Bless all of you. Joe Gauthier
