Joseph's Story
Life
Hi College High friends and alum!
I would enjoy hearing from any classmates who remember me;
feel free to email me (joseph.mitchell AT stonybrook.edu) or google "Joe Mitchell"
and you will learn more about me than you need to know... ;-)
I left B'ville in 1977 for college at Carnegie Mellon University,
where I majored in physics, with a double major in applied math.
I stayed on for 1 year of graduate work, getting my masters in
mathematics in 1981.
I went to warmer weather in California, to pursue a PhD at Stanford,
as a Howard Hughes Doctoral Fellow. (I saw Mike Thornburg there
once, in the chemistry lab!)
I worked also in Malibu at the HRL research labs (the AI Center), and finished
my PhD in 1986, at which point I joined the faculty at Cornell University,
in the School of Operations Research and Industrial Engineering.
Estie Arkin, a classmate at Stanford, also joined the faculty at
Cornell, and we were married in Ithaca, NY shortly after we
arrived there. Also, our 2 daughters (Shira and Ron...Expand for more
i) were born
while we lived in Ithaca. We built our first house there and enjoyed
life at Cornell for several years before moving to Stony Brook,
to be closer to "civilization" and New York City, etc.
We are both professors here now, teaching in Applied Math & Statistics
and doing research in Computer Science, in the area
of algorithms (our papers are easy to find on the web).
We now have an empty nest,. Our older daughter Shira
went to college at Harvard, then did a PhD there (Harvard) in statistics. She works as a data scientist after postdoc at Columbia University.
Roni did her college and grad school (masters, education) at Washington University in St Louis and now lives with her husband (from Wash U, a machine learning expert who studied with one of my former Cornell students) in Mountain View; she teaches in Palo Alto. (and he works at Google).
I still enjoy woodworking, music, tennis, etc.
I don't often get back to B'ville, but would enjoy hearing from
long lost classmates and friends.
Joe
