Joseph's Story

In June of 1965 when I graduated the nightly news was all about the escalating Vietnam War. With the increasing numbers of men being drafted, I tried to join the Air Force, but they weren't interested in people who were color blind, so I ended up enlisting in the US Army and entered January 3, 1966. Because of great test scores, I got training in the Intelligence field and got assigned to the Army Security Agency which is a military branch of the National Security Agency which took its orders from NSA instead of the DoD. I ended up attached to a unit supporting the 101st Airborne Division, and I shipped out to Vietnam on December 7, 1967 with the entire Division. A little less than 2 months later I had the fabulous adventure of participating in the Tet Offensive. With the 101st I was stationed at Bien Hoa a little north of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and then to Camp Eagle in northern South Vietnam. From Camp Eagle I was transferred to a unit supporting the 9th Infantry Division way down in the Mekong River Delta and then after a year, I was transferred back to the United States and worked just outside Washington, D.C. for ...Expand for more
my last year of 4 in the Army. After the Army I moved to California, went to college, got married, got into a family business selling Mobile Homes and built 2 Mobile Home Parks. Because of the droughts here, the business closed when the lakes dried up and construction came to a halt. Because there was an Army Weapons testing range nearby, I then went to work for the Government Agency that does the testing and evaluating the various weapons and ended up at White Sands Missile Range for one of the weapons live fire tests right before the Gulf War. I soon had a chance to go to work for the California Department of Housing where I finished my working life and retired from government work in 2012. Today at 71 years old, divorced ,still play guitar (62 years), enjoy photography and have recently taken up Computer Aided Design and 3d Printing. I am a Grandpa who helps out with his grand children while their mom finishes college and gets her Nursing Degree. I haven't been back to the Springs since leaving in 1970, although my brother and sister both live in western Colorado so I have been back to that part of Colorado many times.
