Joyce's Story

I attended George S. Henry from 1970 - 1973, in the academic program, opting to graduate with an SSGD, instead of an SSHGD, for personal and school culture reasons. It was very hard for me to fit into the Don Mills state of mind, being a kid raised in Ottawa-Hull. I was a bit too "out there," a back slapping, friendly Frenchman! I remember the first time I put my hand on someone's back, to say hello, and was told, "Don't hit me." How I wanted to run back to Quebec!!! Instead, I left school one year early, just to get away from what I found to be a very cool reception to my warm, quirky personality. Still, I have a few fond memories of my time at GSH. I danced in 'The Boyfriend,; painted sets, made stage props, including two very large papier mache trees that replaced two wing curtains for 'Toad of Toad Hall.' They sure got mouldy, though! I ran for Assembly Committee Chairman, but lost to Peter Marcus. That was a bit of a "Carrie" moment, for me. The first Assembly went great! I had a whole chorus of dancers, and I sang my speech to Birds Do It, Bees Do It, ending with Let's vote for Joyce, with me jumping into Stu Blecher's arms. Well, word must have gotten around, and in the second assembly, Stu dropped me onto the stage, with a resounding thud, and laughter from the entire audience. Not nice. I also sang in The Chorale, with a super group of people. Mr. Davis was so nice. I enjoyed Theatre Arts, with Mr. Thompson, and had good walks home from school, with the few friends I did make, Laura Baldwin, Anne Mepham...Expand for more
, Sandor Gyosci, Charlie Wong, and a few more. My home life was very troubled, so I left home at 18, was unable to complete college, and had some very hard years. Because of my troubled homelife, during high school, I spent a lot of time talking with Mr. Hartman, in Guidance, who put me in a special group therapy session that I got called out of class to go to. I, eventually, married at 24, have two great kids, but divorced at 47, due to my emotional instability. Career-wise, I've had a lot of jobs I hated, but did manage to end up writing for two papers, The Bradford Gazette and York Region News. Also, had a Rogers Cable TV show for over four years, called 'Interstellar, The UFO Show.' Yeah, that's right! I'm currently on sabbatical from CHHA 1610 AM, where I host and produce a program called 'A Drink of Water' for o er eleven years. In the meantime, I'm taking time to paint, and do some music. I'm a singer-songwriter working with Grammy, Juno, Polaris prize winning producer, Chris Birkett. My music is available on Apple Music, iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and a host of platforms, globally. It can also be heard on YouTube. Just look for Joyce Aldrich. Your support is greatly appreciated! You can contact me, personally, via LinkedIn. I have three grandchildren, with another on the way!!! 💖 This is the best thing I've ever done, is to have my children! I live alone, with my cat. I did have some relationships, but this quirky girl is better off alone. Hope all of you are well. Take good care of yourselves! 🤗😘💝
