Joyce's Story

School If I had it to do all over again, I would have wanted to play sports year round all 4 years. I would have tried harder in class, got better grades and aspired to go to college right out of high school. The high school teacher that most inspired me was Mrs. McLean. She once told me "you are too smart for this class" and that set me in motion to prove her right. My grades improved a great deal after that and my confidence in my abilities soared. I hope a teacher can read this and realize how encouraging they really can be with a few kind words. College I thought getting a bachelor's degree was going to be a big deal. I know that the piece of paper proving I endured the 4 years of living hell means something... I'm just not sure what. If you don't know what your plan is... plan on waiting until you do! Those grades will haunt you FOREVER! Nursing School was fun... and finally college has paid off for me and my family. Military I went in the Army right after high school. Well, not right out of high school... I had to lose some weight to get in first. But I lost 30 pounds in 4 months and felt great for the first time in my life when I joined. I spent about 5 months in Alabama for basic and military police training. Then I was sent to Germany for 2 years. I had great duty. As far as we were told, we had the largest patrol area in Germany and got paid to tour the countryside in government vehicles... albeit, not good government vehicles. appy VWs only had heat if you were doing 60 on the highway. And putting someone in the back of a van that had no back seats made for some great fun on the way to the station. I loved my time in the 300th MP CO. It was like having 30 brothers (4th Platoon!) and we had so much fun. I miss them all and wish I was in contact with more of them. But Orin... you were my brother like no other and I will always think fondly of our friendship. I then went to Ft. Lewis (though I wanted to go to Ft. Irwin to be closer to home) and secured a spot in the B Co. USAG. The 170th MP Co. was in Panama and this other gal with a family was pissed that she had to go and I didn't. That's what happens when you plan ahead; I had an introduction letter from CID in Germany and checked in with FL CID before in-processing. For once I used my brain for good instead of evil! I got a special temporary assignment with the drug team and was attached to CID for a little while. It was fun while it lasted... met my father in law through CID. My husband was a US Marine and got out just a few months before we met. I re-enlisted once with a guarantee to stay at Ft. Lewis for another year. Did my year then got orders to go back to Germany... that's when I decided to get out. If I had known it would take me another 14 years to have my career under way... I might have stayed in. I did a couple uneventful years in the Washington Army National Guard. And have now been camouflage free for 12 years. (08)
