Judith (J'Ann)'s Story

Life As of 8-25-2007: Married in 1968 right after H.S., div 3 years later; no kids. I worked 1st in a library enviro, then at UofI-Champaign Police Training Inst. & Agr. Pubs. preparing copy for print; lucked into beta-testing IBM's first computer-aided typesetter--fell in love with computers; ad agency & dept. store adv dept; self-employed graphic artist/editor/typesetter in Chicago, Houston and S.A., while working for Blue Cross Assoc., Victory Gardens Theater (programs for David Mamet's early plays!) & Bar Review in Chi. Moved back to TX in '79 to adopt my then-6-yr-old son in 1980. Worked for Dowell Div. of Dow Chem. & Transcriptions Ltd. in Hou; Datapoint, UTHSC-SA Molecular Biology Dept.(on the Human Genome Project!), & SW Institute for Biomed Research in S.A. Remarried in 1984 to the love of my life, my best friend and partner, Randy Sledge. We both worked @ Datapoint 'til they started major layoffs & we left for greener pastures. We began our own software company developing/installing Mac-based software for several small businesses in S.A., Austin & Corpus Christi through all 3 pregnancies (Steven was born in 1986, Shannon in 1988, and Scott in 1990--we got a late start!). Spent 3 yrs. improving "The Glen" in NE S.A. as Pres./VP of the neighborhood assoc., and began home-schooling our children. Most evenings, wkends & holidays we ran a very popular, independent ice cream truck in S.A., then in Floresville, with the kids working the window (reading, math and social skills!). Our eldest (now 21) started college in 2005; our 2 younger kids (now 19 and not-quite-17) chose public school for their H.S. years, the youngest skipped his sr. yr. & finished his last 2.5 credits this summer (home school)--they are BOTH starting college next week. Waiting (patiently) for grandkids! We bought 4 acres outside of Floresville, off the beaten path; working toward getting off the grid for our electricity and ...Expand for more
water needs. Randy and the kids built our "HabBTat" (Housing Affordably Built, Better Than A Tent) almost entirely from re-used materials--my asthma is sensitive to formaldehyde, etc. in new materials. So we've been garage sale-ing and eBay-ing for fun, eclectic, aged furniture. 9/1/75 a neighbor moved in with a Siberian tiger cub, & bought another. Randy & I spent over 2 yrs having county ordinances put in place requiring that the tigers be kept in a cage deemed safe for them. He moved out & gave the tigers away. 10/15/2005 MVA: Randy (driving) got a mild concussion and bruised ribs; I had pneumonia at the time & broke my leg in 3 places + 3 ribs on the left & 2 on the right, & several bones in my right hand; had major tissue damage from the seatbelt ('cause I'm STILL short & they're designed for tall MALE people!); the kids weren't with us. Leg surgery had to wait 'til pneumo cleared (morphine was GREAT--I remember nothing). After surgery & in-patient rehab, broke my tailbone at the 1st of 2 rehab/nursing homes. Came home 6/1/2006. Made interesting friends in the hospital & nursing homes (as I always have, wherever I happened to be). Enjoying working on our family tree(s), writing a book w/Randy, & digi-scrapping pics that never got into albums. (Computers, computers,...) Currently tending 14 "Texas Wander-Ons"--dogs that people have dropped off or moved away and left in the area, as well as OUR 6 dogs. Anyone need a loyal, loving/protective/great watchdog? One sweet, Wht/Blk F even has Mickey Mouse ears on her side. Email me. NO IDEA what challenge/crusade will find us next, but we know one will. Life has been far from dull--wouldn't have it any other way. Sincerely hope everyone else has had as fulfilling a life as I have, & that our age/health don't ever interfere with what our hearts tell us to do. A close friend claims she'll chisel on my tombstone "Nothing in moderation." Seems appropriate!
