Judy's Story
Wow! How time flies. I can't believe we're on the downhill slope to our 50th reunion.
As I'm sure anyone who's interested knows, I am an RN (45 yrs), have been single since 1981 and raised 3 kids by myself. They are all happy, healthy, and successful, and have given me 4 grandchildren.
Tangling with a drunk driver in 1988 eventually took me from the profession I love and sent me back to school in 1995 to get a Master's in Social Work. ( I really wanted a Masters in Divinity so I could become a hospital chaplain but couldn't relocate to do that.) After the kids were on their own and my parents and dog died, I decided I could finally leave Yakima. So, I moved to Portland where I happily lived and worked for 5 years before finally listening to that call to chaplaincy. In 2006 I moved to Berkeley, CA and entered the Episcopal Seminary there. Graduating with my MDiv in 2009, I went on to a one year hospital chaplaincy residency in San Francisco which I completed in August of '10. I fell in love with Berkeley and the bay area and fully intended to stay and look for chaplaincy work. However, 2 weeks after finishing...Expand for more
my 4 year program, I had major back surgery. I came back to Yakima, where I have my best support system, for what was supposed to be a short recovery. However, things didn't go well, and eventually succumbed to disability, with return to Berkeley an impossibility. Retirement came long before I was ready...a big disappointment.
Although none of my kids live in Yakima, I am blessed with a lifetime of friends who are soooo supportive. So, I have stayed here. I'm busy with a couple of small consulting jobs, my 102 year old aunt, and with my Church, St. Timothy's Episcopal. My little dog, Gracie, is my constant companion....always an animal lover! I enjoy a nice dinner out or a movie with a friend. I still love drives in the mountains, bird watching, swimming, and cooking for friends. Am I in a committed relationship? No...would I like to find a great guy? Of course!
What are my passions? Family, social justice, racial/sexual/social equality, environmental responsibility, committed friendship, animal welfare, life-long learning, and the arts as therapy. Fun? Yes, of course! Just don't have enough of it! Who's game?
