Judith's Story
The summer after I graduated from ISTC (now University of Northern Iowa) in 1961 I was waitressing at the Howard Johnson's restaurant on Hwy 218 between Waterloo and Cedar Falls when Arlo Courter from the East High Waterloo Class of '55 brought Bernie McKee from that class in to get some of their delicious ice cream and to meet me. Bernie and I hit it off right away and began dating that evening. We both wound up in the Chicago area where I got my first teaching job. We were married in October 1962 and started a wonderful life together.
After my retirement from 30 years of classroom work with mostly first and second graders I worked as an education consultant for 17 years. I taught courses at DePaul University and National Louis University for ten years. One course was on tropical rain forests for teachers. Bernie and I had an amazing time traveling all over the world visiting rain forests so I would be well informed about the subject. The most fun was our trip down the Amazon River in Peru, fishing for piranha, having breakfast with river dolphins, and other simply astounding experiences.
As a science consultant I worked in various capacities including a good deal of professional writing and travel. Presenting at conferences, running workshops for teachers, ...Expand for more
acting as a Scientist in Residence in local schools, and continuing as an adjunct faculty member kept me engaged in work I thoroughly enjoyed. My most exciting jobs were several invitations for consulting work with teachers at American International Schools in Central and South America. I finally fully retired in 2016 and am now concentrating on friends, family, and volunteer work.
Our son and daughter have lovely families with four lively grandchildren who are tons of fun. We go to the YMCA of the Rockies every other year with everyone for our mountain fix. In the winter we spend some time near our son who lives in the Tampa region to get away from brutal Chicago winters. Our daughter and her family live close to our home in Winnetka, Illinois and what a joy it is!
Bernie sends his regards to those who knew him at East High. He had a successful career in the reinsurance field and continues to add to a long list of community service projects and volunteer jobs. Every day is filled with activities and people he enjoys.
The above was written and posted a few years ago. Sadly, after Alzheimer’s disease caused severe mental decline, Bernie died January 8, 2023. I loved him dearly for the 60 years we were married. He is sorely missed by his family and friends.
