Judy's Story

Life Married Bill Rudolph from Sharyland in 1966 and 2 weeks later he was in Viet Nam. I finished my degree in elem.ed. while he was gone, and then we were stationed at Ft.Sill,Ok. where I had my first teaching job. 2 years later, Bill was back in Viet Nam. He spent 24 years in the Army, and we loved it. I was so lucky to be able to teach in 5 states and Germany and work on my graduate degree in spite of the moving. We retired to Ft. Worth and I taught for the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD. I had to medically retire in 1998 after having a liver transplant in 1994. The doctor's tell us that my liver warranty is getting a little frayed after 13 years, but I thank God that He has given me these extra years. I spend alot of time with the doctors, but that is just part of the transplant business. Stage 4 of renal failure, but if you look at me, I do not look sick. I spend most of my time with our daughter,Barbie, our only child and our two beautiful grandchildren, Cayden Mullane ( 9 years old) and Deklan Gerrit, (4 years old.)..Barbie is an animal science grad from Texas A&M as is her husband, Lucas who has a business degree. They are class of 95 and 96. I read, read, read for pleasure--mostly military non-fiction from WWII-Iraq/Afghanistan. Bill is retired from the Army and then from Tarrant County Sherrifs Dept. Just could not get away from the uniform-wearing,gun on his hip,and the strict military-like discipline. We are animal lovers with our back yard a virtual pet cemetary. Our daughter's sheep from high schoool FFA is even buried back there. When her horse had to be put down, the backyard would not do, so he is buried in a reaol pet cemetary in Bowie,Texas. At this time, we have 3 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (all rescue dogs),and two big dogs we found wandering on the streets. We are suckers for lost animals. As Aggie parents, we bleed maroon and have had seasons tickets for since the kids graduated.. Gig 'em, Aggies! College I loved my college years at Pan American. I lived in Emilia Hall where I was president of the dorm my junior year. I was also secretary of my sophomore and junior classes and chief justice of the student court. I worked for the Dean of Students, the Dean of Men and the Dean of Women who were all in the same office. Bill and I got married the summer before my senior year and 2 weeks later, he went to Viet Nam. So I transferred to Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma to be near my family. I finished my senior year at Phillips and graduated with a BS in education in 1967. I really missed Pan Am and have always been so sorry that I could not graduate with my class. I will always consider myself a Bronco. My college years were some of the best of my life. Workplace During my growing up years in Mission, I babysat alot. Did not have a "real" job until I went to Pan American University and worked for the Dean of Students. Loved that job. My first job after getting a degree was at Ft. Sill, OK where we were statiioned when Bill returned from Viet Nam. After going to college for 4 years to be a teacher, I worked in the shoe dept. of a store like Wal-Mart. Quit that job because customers kept messing up my shoe displays. Then I worked at a laundry, taking in the fatigues of GI's at the front counter. My job was to check all of the pockets before they were tagged. Yuck. If you have ever been in the military, you are aware of how soldiers would field strip cigaretts and put the left overs in their pockets. That is what I had to clean out and they did not provide any gloves. It was a very unsanitary job and not very pleasant. Did not last long in that job. Had a summer job as the director of Red Cross Day Care for the mothers who taught swimming. Finally, I got my first teaching job at Geronimo Elementary outside of Lawton, Ok. I loved those 3rd graders. In October of my second year, Bill got orders for Viet Nam, so I moved back to live with my parents in Enid, Ok. While there, I worked for Aetna Fina...Expand for more
nce Company and saved enough money to meet Bill in Hawaii for R&R. When he came home and went to school in Indiana, we were sent on recruiting duty to Hollywood, FL. I taught school for the Broward County School System for 5 years until Barbie was born in 1974. I stayed out a year and then we went to Baumholder, Germany, probably the best assignment of his 24 years in the Army. I was a teacher in the military day care for the 3 years that we were there. When we came home, we were sent to Hammond, IN on recruiting duty. Bill worked as a field recruiter, station commander, and then went to Chicago where he worked at MEPS. I taught school for the School District of Hammond for 6 years, in a 4th/5th split class and then 3rd/4th split class. Never did like teaching those split classes. We were then sent to Omaha Battalion Headquarters where we lived at Offutt Air Force Base. I taught 3rd graders for Papillion-LaVista ISD and loved it. It was one of my favorite experiences teaching. Most of my children were military brats and they were great. Even had one child who had come from France where her father was on special duty and she spoke fluent French. I had taken French for a year in college and could not remember a word of it. Bill was the operations NCO for the Omaha Batallion and we really did enjoy being stationed there. When he retired in 1989, we moved back to Texas and I taught for 8 years for the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD outside of Fort Worth. I taught 2nd graders for 2 years and the moved up to teach 4th grade Math which I loved. Those last years of teaching 4th graders to love Math were the best of my career. Due to complications from my liver transplant in 1994, I had to medically retire in 1998. Now that Bill has retired from the Tarrant Sheriff's Department, we are both loving retirement. Gives us time to just do what we want, when we want. No alarm clocks, no meetings, no conferences, just sit back and do what we want. It is great! Military I never was in the military, but as the wife of a retired career soldier(24 years in the Army), I consider myself an integral part of the Army. I proudly wear an Army wife charm around my neck and our daughter who is 33 years old proudly wears ARMY BRAT, a term that she is proud of. We spent our time traveling around the states with the United States Recruiting Command after Bill came back from his second tour in Viet Nam. He was a door gunner on a Huey with the 1st Cav. Div. in An Khe in 1966-67 and then he was at Bien Hoa in 69-70. Between his two tours in VN, we were stationed at Ft. Sill, OK. After he came home the second time, we were stationed in Hollywood, FL with Recruiting Command, and then went to Baumholder, Germany for 3 years. We loved Baumholder even tho it was known as "the armpit of the Army". It is a small village in the mountains close to the French and Belgium borders. Our tour over there was probably the highlight of our 24 years. We then were sent to Hammond, Indiana and Chicago in Recruiting Command, Peoria, Illinois. From there, we went to Omaha Recruiting Command, Nebraska where Bill was Operations NCO for the Battalion. Recruiting Command is very small and a very unique assignment since we were usually the only military in a civilian world. We really liked the Omaha assignment because we got to live in Air Force quarters at Offutt Air Force Base. Of course, in those 24 years, Bill was TDY alot and went to alot of different Army schools. Our last assignment was to be in Arlington, VA, but because he would be gone 3 weeks out of the month and Barbie was going into the 10th grade, we decided to retire and come back to Texas. We wanted her to graduate from a Texas High School and then go to Texas A&M which is what happened. When it was all said and done, we wished that we had stayed in the Army because Bill was up for SGT. Major, a rank he had always wanted. Anyway, we enjoyed our years in the Army and would not trade the experience for anything. GO ARMY!!!
