Judy's Story

It has been a long time. I graduated from Shelby High School in 1959. I was very shy and unsure of myself. I planned to go to college at Bozeman MN. and live there with my sister, Dorothy. Well. over the summer I met a fellow and we ended up getting married instead. Sort of on a whim. I did not have to marry him. wish now I did not have such religious attitudes. Would have saved me lots of painful years. but I do have two wonderful 40 years olds from that marriage. Divorced him after 5 years. That marriage was not going anywhere. Moved to Minneapolis MN to go to Mn Institute of Medical Technology and X-Ray. Really enjoyed going back to school and did well. My mom came along to care for my 2 children then 1, and 3. They had a good time also being with grandma. I finished the 18 months of school and instead of getting a job. I got married again. Sure did make some unhealthy choices for my life. Was married for 13 years. and had one more son. that made my family 2 boys and 1 girl. We lived in various places in Minnesota. One a farm in Central MN. That was different than I had ever lived. Enjoyed caring for all the animals. We had milking cows and calves. and Jeff had several pigs. and Joy raised chickens. We also had bantie chickens. they were fun to watch. When I was in my early 20's I started having a lot of pain in my right hip. Never knew what caused it, but daddy had rheumatism and in those days it stood to reason that I might have that also. At that time there was not much you could do for that, so I just kept working and disregarded the pain. But when we were in Long Prairie an...Expand for more
d I was again divorced, I checked with an orthopeadic surgeon and was shocked to learn that I had been born with no hip joints whatsoever. bi-lateral hip dysplasia. like my oldest son said at the time, Mom you know what they do with dogs and horses when they have that... I said Jeff... what an awful thing to say. Well, I had my first hip replacement surgery in January 1980 and the prosethesis broke inside of my leg in 1982. and I have had 4 surgeries on it since. My three teenaged kids said, Mom is bionic and has come unglued! Well I went to Alexandria Area Technical School and studied Accounting and Office Management for 2 years. Jay and I moved back to the Twin Cities and I was employed by the Federal Government Department of Veteran's Admin. for 12 years. Then I was forced to retire on disability. had walked with crutches for 16 years. Had my left hip replaced and then the right one which was almost 3 inches too short was revised and lenghtened. During this time period all of my kids married and started families. I have 7 grandchildren. I now live in an apartment in Senior building in Hopkins MN. with my new cat, Baby Blue who is 5 years old. My last cat, Molly, died last November. She was 19 years old, and had lived with me for 18 years. long time. I still miss her. So now, I have a nice steel= strong walker. I use a 3 wheeled scooter to go uptown.or the library or cheap moviehouse. I do not have a car anymore. wore out several and they are too expensive maintain and fuel. I love to read and check email on computer. Have enjoyed getting emails from classmates. So that is my life!
