Julia's Story

Life Let's see...After high school, I went to Washington University in St. Louis and completed a BFA in Graphic Design, after switching majors from Russian. Deciding that a career in art wasn't for me, I moved to San Francisco and worked on an Americorps program at community clinics serving a low-income, HIV+ population. I worked various artsy, office, and restaurant jobs before moving to Greece for six months and traveling around the Mediterranean. When I returned to SF, I went back to school to earn a second BA in medical anthropology from San Francisco State Univeristy. I focused on women's health and the Cuban healthcare system and was lucky enough to travel to Cuba to study it. After six years in San Francisco, I left to be a program leader for a community development program in Mongolia. I moved from Mongolia to Los Angeles for graduate school in 2005, which was quite a culture shock. I am in...Expand for more
a Master of Public Health program at UCLA; my focus is reproductive and global health. I spent summer '06 working at the United Nations Population Fund in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and resurrecting my Russian skills. I also took a week to travel to St. Petersburg to see the Hermitage, which I have been wanting to since I was a kid. Grad school has been pretty intense, and I am looking forward to graduating early, in March, and getting a "real" job. But, I'm also planning on applying to PhD programs in '07 to research reproductive health in Eastern Europe/Central Asia. What else?...My passions include art history, dance, politics, genealogy, dj'ing, languages. My parents still live in the same house in Bolingbrook, and my younger brother went to culinary school and is the sous chef at a fancy five-star restaurant. He must have gotten the cooking gene in our family, because I am a nightmare in the kitchen.
