Julie's Story

Life Life is a process isn't it? Well, my experience has led me to the belief that being honest with yourself and the people that you love is the best form of authenticity. Most people would never understand my decisions but I assure you that they were well thought out and a necessity. For any of my classmates that are interested and would like to talk, please feel free to contact me. I still work for the San Jose Police Department. I have done things in my professional life which you will only dream of; they are the things movies and television shows are made from and from which, books are written. It has been an "E-Ticket" ride but there are much more important things to share in my life. I am a parent, with (4) children ranging in age from 27 to 16. I also have three other children; (2) steps and one adopted totaling (7); yes SEVEN. They are my focus, especially my baby who is in high school and needs the love, guidance, and supervision. Aside from being a police officer, I write true crime and some fiction. I am in the middle of a novel, a technical guide for employers and an anthology for some law enforcement friends of mine. Professionally, I am currently working a patrol assignment as a crime scene specialist and trying to balance family, work and a relationship. My plan is retire from the police department sometime in 2009. I will probably continue working as an investigator, which is my specialty and has been for all of these years. With these difficult times, it is hard to say what will happen in that regard. I am on countdown mode and will probably be retired within the first part of 2010 after 29 years. A few years ago, I NEVER thought that those words would come out of my mouth, but life and love, change people. It is a fact! I met someone about three years ago. His name is Patrick and he is a Criminologist and just a generally "good guy". We plan of getting married (hopefully soon) and continuing our lives as parents, grandparents and friends. We have many common interests and while he finished his Masters, I am still plinking away at my degree, but frequently am side-tracked by other interests; the most recent being digital photography. School High school was very awkward for me. We all are trying to "find ourselves" but few people really have to do that to the extent that I had to (Thank God!). School was about friends to me. There was my brother- Robert Rodrigues, Nina Macchatelli, Jon Aver, Kellie Hansmyer, Brandon Duke, Tim Rogers, Tom Rogers, Monte Marin, Sharon Anderson, Janna Russmiecell (sp), Mary Reineccius, Cherrie Randall, Monte Marin, Dee Dee Bonham, Brian Keller, Arnie Mozzetti, Ron Slater and others, to be sure. I remember parties, cruising Fremont Blvd.,football games, dances, and trying to find a place where I fit in. I used to think that it was the people that did not fit into my life, but after much introspection, it was I that needed an overhaul. I guess that you could say that I went about as far as one could go in that regard. (Hey if I can laugh about it, you sure can!) I remember Paul Ficken, Bill Harrison, Jim "Coach I" Ingrahm, Mr. Zlotnik, Mr. Wheeler, but my memory of those times is not all it should be. I remember Tom Aston lassoing Jack's head one night after a football game and yanking it off as I drove away down Fremont Blvd. in my Dad's red station wagon. That nearly ended my career, even before it began! I remember talking to Trink in class one day and then getting pulled into the Dean's Offi...Expand for more
ce, our Junior year; accusing us of breaking into the PAA room after a dance; something I hated that moron for, because he was WRONG! I remember Tina driving BK's blue Mustang and Brian cringing the whole time. She loved that car. College College was a time for learning and career direction. I found something that I was passionate about and that enabled me to take my mind away from my personal troubles and apply it to what I felt was a more noble use. I had an interest in law enforcement as did many of our classmates. Jim Jackson, John Coyle, Bill Moon, the Garrity Brothers, as well as my own brother Robert, all work in "The Biz", some retired now...all of these years later. I made many other friends at Ohlone College and later friends, some of whom have become literally life-long friends - I speak of my San Jose PD Family, whom I have come to love, nearly as much as the family that I go home to at night. Academy-Mates from Alameda County and San Jose Police Academies are still a part of my life, in one form or another and though it is not the way it was, my sense of "family" had not changed, even if some of theirs has. Chabot, Ohlone, and Evergreen colleges were a part of my law enforcement education and helped me to become the person that I am at work and the example that I still try to put forth; you see I took the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics literally and have come to hold my life up for others to see. After taking numerous courses in behavioral profiling, I be came proficient in the misunderstood art that is sometimes thought of as science. My education continued through experts in the field. People such as, Special Agents Robert Ressler, Roy Hazlewood, John Douglas, Mary Ellen O'Toole and even Capt.Tom Cronin and SA Mark Prodan, all contributed heavily to my understanding criminal behavior. Clinicians from the mental health field such as, Drs. Reid Maloy, Fred Berlin, Gene Abel and Anna Salter gave me understanding about more practical application and interviewing of offenders, that when married with my police skills became the base from which I operated under hunting serial sexual predators for many years. I am by no means a "know it all" but I know a thing or two about the evil people who prey upon our family, friends, and neighbors. The kind of thing that might just raise the hair on the nap of your neck and sends shivers up your spine, if you happen to be the least bit intuitive. Workplace Well my career started out like everyone else's; at the bottom. I was a patrol officer with no seniority working midnights with Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday off. You have to love the hours....NOT! But in all seriousness, it was fun and educational. I worked my way into the Street Gang Unit and developed skills which took me into Detectives. I specialized in sexual assaults, finding a knack for being able to interview victims/ survivors of horrific crimes against their persons. I worked sex crimes in one form or another for (12) years and later worked in Narcotics, Special Investigations, Burglary, Pawn Shops, Megan's Law, Sexual Predators and did behavioral profiling, for quite a while. I enjoyed the psychological aspect of this to a large extent which led me to become part of the Crisis Intervention Team, working with the mentally ill and or persons in crisis. These were very rewarding aspects of the job. I retire in January 2010 from San Jose PD. I am not sure what I will do after life at the PD but it will be nice to find out what is out there.
