Junius's Story
Attended Western Kentucky State College, Bowling Green; graduated in 1959 and accepted a commission as second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Served in several command and staff positions, including 13 months in northern South Vietnam as the Operations Officer of an artillery battalion, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, 3d Marine Division, followed by three years in Yokosuka, Japan as Provost Marshal, Naval Fleet Activities, Retired in 1980 as a lieutenant colonel, Commanding Officer, 3d Battalion, 10th Marines, 2nd Marine Division. up long distance back packing and hiked the full length of the 2194-mile Appalachian Trail, Georgia to Maine, four times. (1990, 1994, 1998, and 2006) altogether completing about 12,000 miles of backpacking before hanging up my pack. Since, retired, becoming an avid gardener. Have written two books about my hiking experiences: "Walkin' on the Happy Side of Misery," and "Walkin' With the Ghost Whisperers." My wife, Judith, and I have four children, nine grand children, and 4 great grand children. Judith and I currently reside in Hopkinsville, KY.
