Junji's Story
I went back to my country Japan on May 1984 after a year stay in Oxford. The days were really memorable and gave me special experience which not so many kids in Japan was able to have. Living in a different culture, playing and becoming with friends there, and learning the language in a natural way...I was age 10-11. Actually, therefore, I am not a graduate of McGuffey Elementary School, because I moved before the graduation year 1985.
The most shocking thing I experienced after coming back to Japan was the difference in the way to act or to communicate between the two cultures. I have to "stand up, attention to the teacher, and bow to him/ her," at the beginning of each class. No Japanese children wore jeans, rather they(we) prefered short pants. It didn't take time to readapt to Japanese culture. I graduated Japanese junior and senior high school, and continued to study in several universities here.
Even though I grew up mostly in Japanese culture, my experience in Oxford continued to stay and remembered again and again. It influenced to my way of seeing things and thinking. For example, I am always interested in different cultures and love to learn foreign languages, e.g. Chinese, Korean, and Japanese Sign Language. Now, I want to study German!
I live in Chiba prefecture, which is near Tokyo, and am working at a university, teaching and researching education for children with disabilities, especially hearing impairment.
Writing this short sentences, I am very grateful to each person I met in Oxford.
I would like to say thank you!
