Justin's Story
School
Most of my primary and secondary years were in small Texas schools with classic roles and social structures; e.g. preps/jocks/popular crowd; bullies/thugs/disaffected; drama/band; brainy types; misanthropes/rebels; etc. I managed somehow to ride the lines amongst most of these groups, thereby smoothing my social development. When I was 16 I went to the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, a residential early-college admissions program that dumps approximately 400 high school juniors and seniors into a dorm on the campus of the University of North Texas and sends them to high-level colleges classes in lieu of traditional high school. That was a real trip.
College
I graduated in 1995 from the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science in Denton, Texas, an early college admissions program that afforded graduates 62+ hours of high-level college credit upon graduation as high school seniors. I flitted from one major to another for the next several years, still in Denton at the University of North Texas, unable to decide on a good course of action. This was also a time of major exploration of the crazier sides of youth, which probably got in the way of good scholarship. Eventually, I dropped out of school in 1997 out of desperation. Rather than continue to drift through school and waste money, I took a job as a telephone tech support guy at a software company in Dallas...Expand for more
. One day, while reading a rock climbing magazine, I came across a little advertisement for Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage, Alaska. I looked into the Outdoor Studies program there and decided that it fit my bill. After visiting the school, I picked up my life and moved north in January of 1998. Four years later, I graduated with two Bachelor's degrees, one in Outdoor Studies (which is like Outdoor Education) and one in Environmental Science. Having lived as a college student since 1993, I was ready to enter the work world. I'm on an excellent career track now, but will likely go back for my advanced degrees within the next few years.
